We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Dominguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabrielle, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I started Mamasita Movement, I had just started my current touring job with Flo Rida, and created it with the intention of giving students what I felt like is most necessary for growth as a dancer and human. I used to teach classes that were 1 hour long, and did not feel like I set my students up for success by only teaching them choreography. There are so many important factors that come into play as a professional dancer, especially in Heels Technique, that holding a single hour class was not enough. One’s mindset plays such an important role in the game of dance and life. To tap into the feminine quality within us, be confident, and feel empowered, we must first love and accept ourselves for where we are now. This is always the most challenging part, so I wanted to emphasize on what happens when we are faced with mental and physical challenges, so dancers can become aware to then take control. Therefore, it has grown to become a 4-6 hour long workshop for three days! This transition from being a student, to being a teacher not only fulfilled me, but pushed me to believe in myself and the gift I have of teaching. Choosing to do my own thing and create a workshop curated by me, was the best decision I made!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe that what sets me apart from others is my unique movement quality, and the method of teaching I use to lovingly find that quality within my students. Whenever I host a workshop, I get most excited about how I can impact my students. Teaching has become such a huge love of mine and brought me so much purpose in life. To get to where I am today was definitely not easy… I used to deal with very low self confidence and unworthiness in dance. It took so much consistency, meditation, physical work, and emotional work to be who I am today as a teacher. It has made me believe in myself more than ever, because I’ve gotten to know myself as an artist the more I spent in the studio understanding what my voice would look like. The only way to overcome any challenge is to first accept it, become at peace with where you are, and have a clear vision of where you want to be… work towards that vision, feel yourself already in that position, and never give up! Mamasita Movement is about dancing with awareness to reach your fullest potential, this means awareness of your mind, body, and emotions, because they all matter as an artist. What makes art so special is the authenticity in one’s vulnerability, I believe that I am here to help people find their individual voices and breakthrough what’s been holding them back from true liberation as an artist… and put in that damn work!!!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Miami has so much to offer that many locals do not take advantage of, myself included, but I am getting better at it! Going to the beach for a sunrise and sunset is absolutely necessary. And if the day aligns, going at night for the moon rise is also an essential! I really enjoy being outside and indulging in the scenic views and weather Miami has to offer, so going to areas like Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, and Wynwood can be really fun! You get the best of both worlds there with so many delicious food options and beautiful sunny days. Some of my top favorite places to eat are Planta, Vegan Cuban Cuisine, and La Cocinita 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Some impactful people in my journey becoming an entrepreneur were my Mom & the support of my friends and family. My mom is an entrepreneur herself and has been for the past 15 years, killing it! She’s instilled a lot of business woman qualities in me and taught me a lot about how to carry myself and continue pushing forward to the next level. She inspires me to believe in myself and what I have to offer more. I also enjoy reading a lot of books about self help like “Think and Grown Rich”, “Atomic Habits”& books from the author Yung Pueblo
