We had the good fortune of connecting with Lanny Vahlis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lanny, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I am a woman working in the construction industry, mother of two handsome boys, wife and practicing martial arts, Balancing my professional and personal roles has been an evolving journey, shaped by changing priorities and the need for adaptability.

In the beginning, my focus was heavily on establishing my career in the construction industry. As a woman in a male-dominated field, I had to work hard to prove my capabilities. Simultaneously, being a mother added a new dimension to my life. The early years of motherhood required meticulous time management and a strong support system to ensure that I could meet the demands of both work and family.

As I gained experience and confidence in my professional role, I learned to delegate more effectively and set clearer boundaries. My husband’s support has been crucial, allowing me to pursue my career ambitions and martial arts training. With children growing older, their increased independence has also provided me with more flexibility to focus on my personal goals, including my passion for martial arts.

Training as martial arts fighter has taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of self-care. Balancing training schedules with work responsibilities has required strategic planning. I often integrate my training sessions into my daily routine, ensuring that neither my professional performance nor my family time is compromised.

The construction industry is constantly evolving, and so are the needs of my family. Embracing change and remaining adaptable have been key to maintaining balance. Whether it’s advancing my skills in the industry, adjusting my training routines, or being present for my family, continuous learning and flexibility are essential.

Regularly reflecting on my priorities helps me re calibrate my approach to balancing these roles. Open communication with my family and colleagues ensures that I can adjust my commitments as needed. This dynamic balancing act is not about achieving perfection but about making conscious choices that align with my values and goals.

The balance between my roles as a construction professional, mother, wife, and martial art fighter has changed over time, influenced by career stages, family dynamics, and personal aspirations. Embracing change, prioritizing effectively, and leveraging support systems have been crucial in navigating this multifaceted journey.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m from Venezuela and I graduated as a civil engineer and have been working in the construction industry for almost a decade, first as an accounting and then I had the opportunity to be a project manager. Entering the construction industry as a woman has been a journey marked by both triumphs and challenges. This male-dominated field presents unique obstacles, but it also offers opportunities for growth, resilience, and making a lasting impact.

One of the most persistent challenges has been dealing with gender bias. From subtle microaggressions to overt discrimination, navigating these experiences required resilience. There were times when my ideas were dismissed or my capabilities underestimated simply because I am a woman. These experiences, though disheartening, fueled my determination to excel and break these barriers.

Earning respect in this field involved not only demonstrating technical expertise but also developing strong leadership skills. I took on challenging projects, sought out mentorship, and continued my education to stay ahead in the industry. My efforts were aimed at proving that gender does not define capability.

Every obstacle I’ve faced has taught me valuable lessons. From dealing with gender-based challenges to managing work-life balance, each experience has strengthened my resolve and shaped my approach to problem-solving. My journey is a testament to the fact that perseverance and hard work can overcome even the most entrenched biases.

As I continue to grow in my career, my focus remains on breaking new ground and paving the way for future generations of women in construction. The industry is slowly evolving, and I am committed to being a part of this transformation, ensuring that the path is smoother for those who follow.

My journey in the construction industry, while challenging, has been immensely rewarding. By confronting and overcoming gender biases, balancing multiple roles, and advocating for change, I have not only built a career but also contributed to the broader movement for gender equality in the workplace. The challenges are real, but so are the opportunities for those who dare to break the mold.

On the other hand, my mission is to make self-defense training accessible and appealing to women from all walks of life. I envision a world where every woman feels safe, confident, and empowered.
