We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat M. Garcés and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat M., why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Creativity has been a constant in my life since childhood. I was always writing in diaries, scrapbooking, singing in chorus, dancing, and playing piano. Ironically, I never felt I could fully express myself at home, often being dismissed as “too sensitive.” This experience led me to pursue an art career with a purpose: to inspire others to embrace their vulnerabilities without fear or shame.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is a vibrant mix of personal experiences and cultural influences, using magazine and vintage book cutouts. Its unique blend of pop art and surrealism sparks conversations about identity, belonging, and societal norms.

The many layers in my collages represent the complexities and nuances of life, encouraging viewers to look beyond the surface and pay close attention to the details. This layered approach is a reflection of my belief that our identities and experiences are multifaceted, and it’s these intricacies that make us who we are.

Professionally, my journey has had both triumphs and challenges. I studied at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, earning an Associate of Science degree in Graphic Design and the best portfolio award. However, breaking into the art world is not easy. Like many artists, I faced self-doubt and struggled to find my voice.

Overcoming these challenges requires persistence and authenticity. I learned to channel my anxieties into mastering my craft, eventually seeing my own value. Embracing my cultural heritage and personal experiences has been central to my artistic expression.

Through my art, I hope to inspire and spark conversations about our shared human journey, celebrating the beauty in diversity and the layers that make up our identities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a resident of South Florida, the beach is a must. I would spend our mornings near the water, whether that Fort Lauderdale Beach or kayaking at West Lake Park. I enjoy immersing myself in the arts, whether that’s attending an opera, play, or symphony at the Performing Arts Center or catching live music and drinks. I also appreciate unique culinary experiences, so we might have dinner while exploring the waterways of Fort Lauderdale or attend a fun drag queen brunch at R House in Miami.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m fortunate to have a supportive partner who encourages me to embrace my authentic self. I’m grateful for my family and friends who consistently show up to support me, and for every person who has collected my art or purchased prints. It keeps me motivated. Currently, I’m reading “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron, which is helping me elevate my art to the next level. I believe that creating meaningful art requires digging deep within yourself, which can be uncomfortable, but it’s essential for genuine expression.
