We had the good fortune of connecting with Julio Lau Borrayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julio, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
One aspect of the architecture industry that outsiders are likely unaware of is the level of personalization and client involvement required to bring a project to life. At Studio Bas LLC, led by Julio Lau Borrayo, we don’t just design spaces; we craft environments that resonate with the unique needs and aspirations of each client. This process involves more than just applying standard design principles—it requires deep collaboration, where we listen, adapt, and refine our approach to ensure that every detail aligns with our client’s vision.

Our commitment to quality and innovation means that each project is a custom solution, blending creativity with precision. It’s not just about constructing a building; it’s about creating a space that enhances the lives of those who inhabit it. This dedication to personalization is a fundamental, yet often overlooked, aspect of our industry, and it’s something we take great pride in at Studio Bas.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Without a doubt, there are many places in Miami that I would recommend. As an architecture enthusiast, my first stop would be the Pérez Art Museum, where we would not only appreciate the artworks it houses but also the architecture of the building, which is undoubtedly a masterpiece. I particularly enjoy the Thursday evenings on the museum’s terrace, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm, where there’s always a guest artist offering some great music—I’m especially fond of jazz.

Next, I would take you to visit the One Thousand Museum, a remarkable residential building designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, a Pritzker Prize winner.

For evening activities, I would recommend several spots in Wynwood, including BOHO House Miami and Cervecería La Tropical. A stop at ZeyZey Miami, a venue that opened in 2023 but is already making waves, is an absolute must.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our success is rooted in a profound sensitivity, recognizing that the true practice of architecture is, in its purest form, an art. I grew up in a family environment in Cuba, surrounded by the love and sacrifice of my parents and my brother. Throughout my adolescence and years of study, my father was the pillar of our family, the unwavering support that never faltered. My mother, though tirelessly hardworking, dedicated herself with unmatched care to our education, always present, always watchful.

But it is my brother, eight years younger than me, who holds a special place in my heart. He was my friend, my confidant, my son in a way, and my favorite person in the world. Life, in its cruel irony, took him from me at the age of 21 in a tragic accident, but his presence remains alive within me. He is my guide, my light, my guardian angel. If there is anyone to whom I owe my success, it is my family, and especially that angel who continues to accompany me: my brother Joel.
