We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Schmertzler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kevin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always been a person who enjoys memories and looking back on some of the great times in my life. I always loved looking at old photos from my journey. Creating a photography business was one way I could help others remember the great times they have.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love moody street photography. I use that mood to generate some moody tactical and fitness photos. I also enjoy lifestyle work along with product stuff for clothing brands. I like when my clients give me feedback so I don’t mind working longer to bring their image to life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Fort Lauderdale and love the art scene so I’d take them to the art district in downtown for a beer at Glitch Bar where you can play vintage games while you drink. I’d also take them to Wynwood Art district to explore the Miami scene. You also can’t go wrong with anything on Fort Lauderdale beach.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my aunt Lucy Unsworth who runs Unsworth Photography. She’s an amazing photographer out of Arizona who turns wildlife into beautiful prints. I watched her start her photography journey when I was a kid. Her work is amazing and she is a huge inspiration to me.
