We had the good fortune of connecting with WALTER GOMES and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi WALTER, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business goes back to my love for music. In the 90s, while attending the University of UMass Amherst, I discovered the power of DJing for large crowds from diverse backgrounds. The energy from performing was something I truly connected with. After graduating, I started DJing at nightclubs and making money from it. Back then, it didn’t feel like a business. It was more about performing, getting paid, and reinvesting that money into buying records and equipment.

However, after moving to Africa in 2010, I began to view it from a business perspective. The money was larger, and I was living in a new country with different financial realities. I started treating it more like a business – not just buying music but investing in property, opened a restaurant business, and purchasing a cars. I even launched a record label, collaborating with producers and expanding my investment into the music industry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art, for me, has always been about creating experiences through music. As a DJ and now as a producer, I’m focused on Afro house because it allows for the kind of connection with the crowd that transcends barriers like age or appearance. What sets me apart is the journey I’ve taken, from being a DJ who just loved music to becoming a producer and artist with my own songs out there. The shift from DJ to artist is something I’m particularly proud of. It’s not just about spinning records; it’s about telling my story and connecting with people on a deeper level through my original music.

Getting to where I am professionally was far from easy. There were lots of challenges along the way, from transitioning my career from a hobby to a business to moving to Africa and starting fresh in an entirely new market. But through it all, I learned that consistency and the willingness to take risks are key. Every obstacle became a lesson, whether it was about managing my brand, dealing with setbacks, or just learning to adapt to new environments.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that success isn’t instant—it’s about continuous improvement. And you have to be willing to put in the work, even when the results aren’t immediately visible. I’ve also learned the value of staying true to who you are and what you stand for. For me, that’s the music.

What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it’s built on passion, consistency, and the love of music. My story isn’t just about being a DJ; it’s about evolving and sharing my journey with others. The goal is to make an impact through music that speaks for itself, not just as a performance but as something that stays with people long after the music ends.
