We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Stiltner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacob, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I try to not think about whether I should keep going or give up. I am always just doing. There are times of course when I don’t do, for the sake of taking a break but not because I can’t keep going. My work revolves around not thinking about what to do next or where to go. I have set parameters for my work, and every new project just revolves around them. There is no need to think or question whether or not to continue.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am most amazed at now for I have come. Not necessarily in skill or talent but in mindset. How I think, feel, and interpret things has amazed me.
I used to be a one trick pony with nothing to state but the obvious. My work before was scared, predictable, and superficial. I still admire the quality and out of painting and drawing, but when I create work, I want more.
I am no longer afraid of experimentation and whole-heartedly embrace the curiosity.

My work not revolves around repetition and erasure. I utilize utilitarian materials such as glue and tape. I create “drawings and paintings” using these materials that get added on to or removed. I was inspired by the tranquil aesthetics ofEastern painting but do not follow their reasons for using the repeating line. If anything my reasons come from western cynicism about the future of labor and purpose.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Miami, Florida, its a busy and fast paced city but luckily I live in a quieter suburban part of town. I am not much of a city person. I prefer a quiet night out that may involve a movie at a local theater and grabbing a bite to eat at a nearby Ramen place I along with a trip to the Keys for a splash in the ocean.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank both my partner and mother for being not only my number one supporters but being incredible women in their own right that are always going above and beyond in their own pursuits and motivate me everyday to be a better man.
