Meet Jamere Eggelton: Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamere Eggelton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamere, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I remember telling myself after changing majors in college from nursing to studio arts, that I would never sit behind a desk all day. After changing my major, I saw the term career differently. I saw it in a light that made me more excited. My schooling still had the art history and basics but being at that age, kind of clueless what to do after it all, creating projects with purpose and deeper meaning was everything to me at the time! I knew I had to make one of the arts a career. So many options all giving me a great feeling and sense of passion for my work. I dove into photography because of how much I enjoy people. Capturing moments and memories for others is a service I appreciate. I can make people look back at that moment with family, friends, or a loved one passed and they can feel that same feeling of love or joy just looking at it. It’s like a time capsule. I love it. 

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s taken me a minute to dive back to my art after college. Hit a little road bump, had a few little ones, and just felt a little lost within who I was. It happens to the best of us, no shame! I felt torn and told myself to give it a final go and if my heart wasn’t in it, I’d keep it as a hobby and just enjoy it for what it was. I started back up taking photos and I’m still in the beginning of it all. Everything is so different now than when I graduated college. The digital world is thriving and so present. I have to keep adapting and learning and pushing myself to keep positive and remember how it makes me feel. I’m excited to see where my investments take me. I have plans for adorable mini sessions for all seasons next year, I am trying to hone in on my craft but I just love it all. I love people and their stories. Every person sees and lives life so differently, it’s great to share a day and capture it all. Lessons. Those are hard and always coming. The main thing I could say I’ve learned so far is to not stand in your own way. Taking on a new adventure is scary. It’s the fear of the unknown outcome but it’s just like anything else. Be in control of what you can and just go for it! For me as long as I try and give it my best, I don’t feel like I’ve failed.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, Cedar Rapids is small, but I could be saying that because I grew up here. It’s always trying to evolve and keep up but it still feels like home. I would say we get some drinks and lunch at Bushwood, it’s a great sports bar where I happen to work on the side. The girls there are great and the pizza is soooo good! I’d also recommend Local Pour! It’s amazing food and fun cocktails take the cake for me. They have a cool patio with fire pits and group seating. Super Cool. I’d say after that, it’s mani-pedi time. What girl can resist a little relaxation/spa time. Hopefully it would be in Summer/Fall because I love the Palisades Park we have. I’ve shot multiple photo sessions there and it’s a great place to hike. Beside that I can be a home body and hope we hang out and chat one of the days. If I’m not working I try to relax as much as possible. Lastly, If it’s summer time, the Amphitheater has some great concerts! It’s a staple of summer time here in CR.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shoutout my Dad. The man is wise beyond his 70 years. He has never once tried to steer me in a direction that I didn’t choose for myself. Always there to support & lift me up. I’ve learned so much from him. He’s a quiet guy but when he speaks, it’s volumes to me. I take it all in and appreciate it all. I also have join a photography group/mentorship with The Heart University. They have courses and so much information to help invest in yourself & your business. These ladies are amazing! It’s rewarding to be a part of their community!
