We had the good fortune of connecting with David Acevedo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi David, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
The thing about art is that a lot of people fail to see it’s relevance in the world. Art is everywhere and it takes a creative spirit to first imagine, then design and lastly, execute a final product. To me, this is the same process for most things created by the human hand. Everything from cars to bicycles, jewelry and watches, crafts and fine art. If more people appreciated the work and value of creatives, especially those who dedicate their lives to produce fine art, there wouldn’t be as many struggling local art galleries, and the world would be a little more vibrant.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an intuitive artist, I’ve always been guided by the happenings of my day, my mood and experiences from the past and present. The biggest struggle was to find a clear voice for my message. At the beginning of my career, I struggled to find cohesiveness in my work because my mind was all over the place with too many influences. I’ve learned to channel, somewhat, these creative impulses and find elements to tie the pieces together – Werther using a repeated technique or medium, or a symbol or signature color in a variety of ways. What’s important to me is that my work remains honest and mine. Sometimes, I see artists that paint to please a certain cliente and I don’t judge them, but I do not want to become one. I’d like to present a painting to the viewer that they’ve never seen before. Maybe that’s why I limit the amount of prints I do for some work or never have reproductions made of some pieces.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the Butterfly Estates in the Gardners Park District and Downtown Fort Myers. These two areas inspire me with their shops, restaurants and places to sit and enjoy the amazing weather.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize all the fantastic members of DAAS CO-OP Art Gallery in Fort Myers, FL. Their dedication and support to this amazing little venue. It is because of them that the project continues and stayed open, even during the pandemic months and closures. This group of local artists have demonstrated incredible resiliency and they inspire me to continue working every day.
