We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chelsea, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
This is not your Grandmother’s wallpaper! I know I say it a lot but it is so true! I can’t tell you how many people are amazed at how far the wallpaper industry has come in the last 20 years. It continues to grow and continues to amaze me. There are so many different patterns and textures out there in so many different styles and price points.

What should our readers know about your business?
The growth process for my business has been a rollercoaster. I have wanted to quit so many times because I felt it would be so much easier to show up to work and leave at the end of the day without all the other stresses that come with owning a business. I am so happy I never gave up! Anyone that owns their own business I’m sure will tell you the same thing. The most important thing I have learned is that you can’t take anything personally. If someone goes to a competitor or shops online it can feel very personal and hurt you. You have to understand that it might not always have to do with you personally or how you run your business. Another major lesson I learned is that you have to understand community over competition! We are all out here trying to make a life for ourselves by doing what we love and there is enough to go around. Support your community and support the other businesses even if they might be doing the same thing as you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I have family or friends in town the first place I usually take them is Blind Monk. It is one of my favorite little wine bars. I also take them to the green market and Grandview. Hullaballoo is always such a fun experience as well. We also like to take our friends and family out on the boat to Utiki after a good fishing day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My success comes from my community and my amazing clients. Referrals from my clients have truly helped my business grow substantially. I also have had such good mentors in my life and people I look up to that are always a phone call away for business or design advice such as my cousin Amy Lutz, my mother Wendy Brooks, among my super talented designer friends to name a few Angela Reynolds and Melinda Mullen.
