We had the good fortune of connecting with Seven Meave and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Seven, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success would be my relentlessness to shut up. I know that sounds strange, maybe even harsh? but being taught from a young age to behave, stay quiet and make myself small to fit in didn’t feel right or moral. It’s one reason why it took me so long to find my identity. In time I learned my creativity comes out best when I’m unapologetically myself, and I encourage others to be just as loud with their creativity.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art steps outside of the boundaries of gender and common expression. I don’t look at makeup as a tool to look “presentable” or “pretty”. I look at it as paint on an intimate canvas. Getting to this point took a lot of reflection on how I’m perceived, as well as how I perceive art. Spending hours staring at a mirror getting familiar with the shapes of my own face, or spending hours working on a model and learning to appreciate their features. I have a whole new understanding of beauty and more importantly, the personalities I find under whoever trusts me enough to put art on their skin. While makeup can be washed off the most important part isn’t necessarily the end result but the process of creating and bending the boundaries of makeup.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
New Orleans is my favorite city in the world! My family is from there and visiting feels like home. The people are loud, the music is loud, the food is loud. It’s a city that represents not caring what anyone thinks about you. I would do anything to listen to another underground jazz show.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend, driving force and photographer Charlie Durso (aka @slugsushi)
