We had the good fortune of connecting with Missy Megginson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Missy, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Isn’t this the question of the century?! I am always in constant pursuit of what work-life balance looks like. What I have learned is that it looks different EVERY DAY! When I initially started my career 17 years ago I worked hard. I kept grueling hours, on my feet with little downtime and I burned out quickly. Fast forward to now. I am working potentially “harder” than I ever have but each day there is a check-in with how I’m feeling. I’ve had to learn that listening to my body and my mind is the key to my so-called quest for balance. This week I might be able to coast through my hours with little downtime and feel great! Next week might require me to set aside more moments to pause, be present with my kids and family and rest my body. The ability to have those check-ins has quite literally changed my business!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I own a salon in Tequesta, Florida, still serve clients behind the chair 4 days a week, and have an online education company that specializes in marketing and business practices for hairstylists.

I love that I have been able to reinvent myself in the beauty industry multiple times throughout my career. When my girls were younger, I choose to let my career to a little bit of a side seat (not quite back seat) role. Then, as seasons change, I’ve been able to take on more, or pivot what a day in the life of my business looks like. I firmly believe that you can be a mom deeply in love with your kids and fulfill your professional career goals. It doesn’t always look pretty, and I have had to learn how to have a hefty dose of humility to ask for help, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
OHHH this is fun!!!

Let’s just say I love to eat. So anytime I’m taking someone around any city, you can almost guarantee it’s going to be centered around food. I would definitely make sure that we grabbed a coffee. My favorite local spot is Subculture and then an acai bowl from Elements in Juno Beach. Make sure you add almond butter to your bowl! Then we would take our bowls to the beach! For lunch I love Leftovers Cafe, we’d get the sweet potato-crusted snapper over salad, because well we’re having pasta for dinner. For dinner, we’d go to Lynora’s in Alton and hopefully get to sit outside!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband! We got married when I was 20 and just 3 months out on my own as an independent stylist. I can hands down say that if I didn’t have his support, willingness to bring me coffee on long days and constant help with our two girls there is no way that I could do what I do!
