We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian & Cassandra Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian & Cassandra, how does perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Prior to opening K.W.A. Group, LLC, both Brian and Cassandra Oliver had full-time demanding jobs. Brian was working in corporate B2B sales/sales management and Cassandra was a high school principal. Both truly excelled in their previous careers and adopted the M-F workday cycle that could extend into evening hours, while juggling parenthood, marriage, social and civic activities. They were often very exhausted as they felt managing time was outside of their control and surviving until the next task was complete was the norm. In reflection of the past 25 years of their adulthood, routine was something they fell into without aim on their use of time and balance. Not until they opened their company did the explicit conversation of the use of time, work-life balance, and fulfillment become a focus. They began their conversation towards creating a narrative for their next stage of life with the central idea that there was a need to prioritize a balance around the four roles that were ever present in their lives: marriage, parenting, individuality, and business owner.
Over a period of months, implicit and explicit conversations around the mentioned roles led to an understanding that each one requires time, commitment, dedication, thought, and action for their needs to be met. It was as if a whole new way of living evolved. Communication between them became more fluid as they began to focus on making sure that the roles, they agreed upon received the attention to grow on a deeper level. They had fallen out of routine and began to release the anxiety, stress, and pressure of the work day cycle. Now as business owners, there are hard stops after closing hours to assure that their other roles are not overshadowed. They do not allow themselves to subscribe to the checklist behaviors they previously were inundated to maintain. There is a clear balance within self to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed. They create more time for unconventional dates with each other that happen at any given moment. They realize how their children appear to be thriving more with less agitation. Brian and Cassandra have always been firm believers in maintaining separate interests, especially in the space of travel. Now this practice is communicated with their children and how they function as business owners.
They believe that there was always a balance, however, the focus and weight of each of the items on the scale has to be discussed and modified as needed. It wasn’t a matter of life being too short; it was more so a matter of the time given in each day was not being utilized properly. They have chosen to strike balance on their own terms to create a peaceful movement in the time that they have to function successfully in their life roles.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Palm Beach County Majestic Ash Lounge offers an inviting atmosphere for a cigar bar. To party we are going to the Bamboo Room for music and entertainment. We are getting the ultimate in massage services at Serenity Rose Spa. Must handle the hair and all things beauty at Beauty Lounge Salon Suites with Master Stylist Tracy Henry. Jamaica House Grill for beautiful ambience and food to die for. After all this exploration, we would have to rejuvenate with infusion therapy at NutriFlo IV Lounge. Can’t go wrong with these spots.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
