We had the good fortune of connecting with Rodney Royal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rodney, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
One habit that I’ve had since I was a child is drawing on any blank piece of paper I can get my hands on. Even today as an adult I m always doodling, drawing or sketching on paper. It serves as practice and therapy for me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist born and raised in Miami, Florida and my art represents my culture and the blend of cultures that make up South Florida. I’m self-taught and I’ve been an artist all of my life. I specialize in fine art and murals but I pride myself on being able to paint on anything. There are many challenges that come with being an African-American artist, often being looked at as second class in the art world. Be made it a point to keep my foot on the gas and push past any obstacles in my way. Art is my passion and I love creating.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m definitely taking them through every street in Wynwood because that’s an experience in itself. Being able to see and touch works of art from all over the world. Once the hunger sets in we’d have to get some soul food, Jamaican food, Haitian food, and Cuban food. After eating we’d continue just by taking a drive through Miami just randomly bending corners because there is so much to see.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My son Kyon White-Royal, owner and creative mind behind “Royal Thredz”.
