We had the good fortune of connecting with Galia Hili Pasternak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Galia Hili, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I am deeply sensitive to the term success as it holds within at the same time its contrast- the failure . How do one defines success and failure? Is it when you make enough money? or when you are well known and popular? or perhaps when your parents are finally proud at you? for many years I was a victim of external definitions of success and not finding my own truth about it. That made me miserable. I knew there was no way I could follow up what I think the world appreciates. It took a while, until at the age of 35 I could no longer play this game anymore and broke free. I realized there was nothing i need to prove anyone.
I know now that the sense of fulfilment and accomplishment finds me when I follow my guts, my heart, loyal to my intuition. That is how I make my art, write my texts, communicate with people, initiate projects. The ideas comes quickly, my approach is fluent, and solutions are easily found. When those are a result of my core vibration I meet the world prepared and willing towards me. I create original paths in the world and I expand and grow in the exact measurements that are fitting me perfectly. Containing and moving forward.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is all about personal stories, biographical, imaginary, or gestures I make to actual events/art history/specific figures that intrigues me. I visualize a scene and then draw and paint it. My painting and drawing bears titles that add meanings to the scenes. They are figurative, colorful, expressive paintings. I’m excited when I have an important message that I manage to compose in a sharp, humoristic and yet dark manner.
I started my way in the art academies in Paris, London and Jerusalem where I accomplished my Master in fine art. Luckily I was noticed by gallerists and curators During that time so I started showing my work in galleries and museums in Israel and overseas. I would say that made an easy start for me.
The challenges came later, over the years, inside the studio. I have an urge to change my ways all the time. Try different mediums, leap to other projects, never staying safe in the same spot. I’ve learned how consistency is important, to be alert, sensitive and interested in the world. That is my fuel.
I’m proud of producing fresh entities in my art over and over again. Always digging, searching and inventing new ways to express myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start every day with a good long walk on the Tel Aviv beach, from north to south, have a swim and practice some yoga. Then go to the flea market for coffee. Two days of the trip would be dedicated to the art scene, visiting galleries and museum in Tel Aviv. Lunch and snacks nearby, for one can’t see art on an empty stomach. 2-3 days will be in the desert, enjoying the calmness, dry clean air and beautiful starry nights. One day for dead sea floating, one day for Jerusalem holy sights. Israel is a very rich, versatile place. The people are raw, beautiful and strait forward, the food is amazing and very friendly for vegans. The art scene is quit bold and unique.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would thank all the people I met over the years who showed me which qualities I wouldn’t want to follow and for those who I saw truth and love in their ways. I appreciate and cherish the Course in miracles, all that Pema Chodron published, the basic guidance of Human design. Also my mother Aviva Pasternak who is a brilliant painter and teacher and my Grandmothers who were courageous women, creative and loving. I thank all those who showed me love over the years and believed in me.
