We had the good fortune of connecting with Gaston Becherano Cohen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gaston, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I actually dislike the word work life balance. If done appropriately, both should feed the other. If I’m happy at work, I’ll come home and be happy with my girlfriend or friends. If my situation at home is healthy, then I will come to work and be happy. Additionally, I don’t really think there needs to be a specific time or formula for work life ‘balance.’ Sometimes, I’m consumed in the work I am doing and that really energizes me. Sometimes, that wanes and I need to put more focus on other activities that give me energy. My recommendation would be to listen to oneself and go from there.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I own a hospitality group called Omotenashi Group, which owns and manages the Aventura Gardens Market, Smorgasburg Miami, Bonsai Cafe, and Motorcycle Matcha. Nothing that ever is worth it ever comes easy. I started my career by opening Bonsai Cafe in New York on January 4th, 2018. It was a tough learning curve grasping the reality of having to balance and wear several hats let alone the fact that we were opening a cafe in a hyper competitive environment- New York City.
This initial business led to many other opportunities which now have materialized into the market in Aventura and Smorgasburg in Miami. I’m most proud of just continuing this path. It’s very tough to stay on it and ride out challenges that come the way of any entrepreneur. However, the adventure of building something is thrilling enough for me to make it impossible to really ever get off the ride.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d start the day running the Venetian causeway into Miami Beach. I’d run with them along South Point Park and up the beach. Then I’d cut across and get breakfast at Mango under the Tree. We’d continue our run until we got to The Standard, where we would jump into the swimming pool and the ice tub they have there (I LOVE Ice baths.)
After the run, we would head over to Drinking Pig BBQ, where you can find the best BBQ in Miami (and I dare say America, too.) After our lunch, we would drive over to key Biscayne, where a rental boat would take us out to wakeboard. Then we would head to Smorgasburg Miami around two or three to devour food from the best food vendors in all of Miami, all the while, taking them on a mini tour of Wynwood, where Smorgasburg Miami is located. In the evening, I would take my friend to Krus Kitchen, one of the best new restaurants in Miami that opened recently.
On Sunday, we would start the day heading over to the Aventura Gardens Market, and enjoy the morning sipping on juices and munching on fresh bread and produce. Then, we would head to the beach where we would play a game of spike ball and spend the rest of the afternoon.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents! Big shoutout to my Mom for pushing my idealistic and dreamer part of me and my Dad for pushing my realistic, practical, and business portion of myself. Nothing that I have accomplished would have been possible without their support.
