We had the good fortune of connecting with Maiko Suzuki and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maiko, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I didn’t really have thought process when I started my jewelry business…. I started making jewelry because I was very curious about metal working and I am very passionate about create things with my hands. So I started making rings that I want to wear in the beginning but people are started to show some interests on my pieces and it became very expensive hobby so I decided to start my brand.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The challenges for me is, how to be different from other jewelry designers. There are millions of jewelry designers out there and it is very competitive field. I know my vision and I know what I want to make so my most challenge is keep it going… keep creating and don’t get distracted by others. I am also one of the few artists that create by hand. A lot of people use 3D printing lately and I prefer work with my hands. I really enjoy the process of making by hands and that is my joy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would introduce some of my good friends and hang out, take her to my friend’s store or somewhere very local that it is not on guidebook for sure. Again most of my friends are artists or designers so I will find some cool art exhibitions or art performances in a city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank to my mother and father. They were both graphic designers and artists. They definitely gave me some special talents. And raised me with full of art and creativity. That is something I cannot buy and replace with anything else. I also think I am very lucky to have so many friends who are artists and designers. Their works and vision inspire me a lot and I am grateful that we always support each other as individual creators.
