We had the good fortune of connecting with Tom Porta and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tom, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As soon as I realize I could be a fulltime artist the balance just faded. Being an artist is not really a work, is a state of being.
So, to me, there’s no limit between “work” and everyday life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a fulltime painter since 2004, my background is in music, photography and illustration. I’m a traditional figurative artist yet I’m a man of my time and multiple influences are moulded into my work.
Living out of an artistic work isn’t easy, especially here, in Italy, as it odd it may sound.
The path I follow is no different than many others, my will is strong as it is the continuos balance between ego, reality, skills, study.
I always got more ideas than the ones I’m able to materialize but, overall, I’m quite prolific.
The lifelong lesson for me was pretty simple.
Work, then work.
And then work more.
Ban the auto indulgence, do not think to be better than the ones you measure yourself with.
Just be better.
In the and you paint what you IS.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I do live in Milan, Italy. An itinerary is pretty much useless, the city is not that big and, wherever you go you’re gonna find something interesting.
Where to eat?
C’mon, this is Italy.
Everywhere.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I just got too many, really. But I have to say the single one with me all the time is my beloved and faithful companion, Robin, an American Staffordshire Terrier.
