We had the good fortune of connecting with Felix Jorge Reynoso, MA, MBA-HC and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Felix Jorge, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Flamingo BBQ began simply as a passion project for my wife and I. Born and raised in Hialeah, FL, we both loved every aspect about grilling and knew we wanted to put our stamp on the BBQ industry, but we were not exactly sure how to go about it. During the pandemic, however, we began grilling more and more and realized that generic BBQ sauces, while good, lacked the flavors and spices that we, as second-generation Cubans Americans, love on our food! This sparked an idea and after months of brainstorming and careful consideration, Flamingo BBQ Co. was born.
Flamingo BBQ Co. gives our team a chance to make a difference in the national sauce industry by providing the richest and most flavorful sauces all the while representing our beautiful City of Hialeah. Since 2020, our mission has been to deliver the richest and most flavorful sauces in the industry while always encouraging our customers to get out and grill! Our signature sauces in the Flamingo BBQ Co. line-up contain flavors that resonate with the Miami and South Florida culture which puts our city in the national limelight.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I’m not working on our sauces, I am a Senior Project Manager in Applied Sciences at a healthcare consulting company. As a project manager, I wear several of hats but I mainly communicate with member hospitals to help launch and/or complete industry funded research. I am also a Doctor of Healthcare Administration candidate and hope to defend my dissertation next summer.
The main lesson I’ve learned throughout my professional and academic career is that you are never too smart to continue learning. It’s incredibly important to be open to knew ideas, philosophies, and practices as they can directly impact your success. That ability to always have an open mind has propelled me to where I am today, a successful doctoral student who co-founded a family business.
Flamingo BBQ Co. is a family business. While there are a million other sauce companies out there, we take pride in our recipes, our culture, and our mission. We chose the Flamingo as our mascot as it represents our upbringing in Hialeah. Although you can find great sauces in cities across the U.S. like Memphis, Austin, or Charlotte, our brand challenges that status quo and proves that great BBQ sauces can also be found right in our back yard. We are proudly and unapologetically from Hialeah, FL!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
You HAVE to go to Morro Castle on 1201 W 44th Pl, Hialeah, FL 33012 – delicious!
I would also highly recommend to visit the Wynwood area, check out the Wynwood walls and go to Centro – amazing place for drinks and dancing.
Would also highly recommend Sexy Fish on 1001 S Miami Ave, Miami, FL 33130 – just opened up but amazing place for dinner!
Finally, you can’t leave Miami without trying ice cream from Azucar on 1503 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this shoutout to my amazing and beautiful wife, Gisselle G. Reynoso. From our graduations from Florida International University (FIU) to launching our business, she has been my #1 supporter every step of the way. She is the one person that is constantly pushing me to be better and better every day and I owe all of my success to her. Gisselle, you are my rock! Couldn’t have made it this far without you!
