We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Batt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, how do you think about risk?
Throughout my entire life, I’ve always struggled with fear. A few of the big ones off the top of my head:
Fear of others’ opinions
Fear of failing
Fear of looking stupid or like I didn’t know what I was doing
Fear of rejection
So, when I think about risk, I automatically think about the fears. For the majority of my life, I allowed those fears to hold me back. One day I made a decision to ignore the fear and do it anyway. If the risk can help me move forward, I’m going to lean in and do the things with courage in life and business.
Through this process my comfort zone has grown and I have continued stretching myself to be the best version of myself. If it wasn’t for being willing to take the risk, I would never have left the comfort of my bubble to start a business and pursue my passion.
In my opinion, risk is an opportunity to surrender and trust God. Obviously we don’t want to be flippant and irresponsible. Be wise and discern the risk.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a stay-at-home-mama & college dropout turned top six-figure direct sales leader who found myself exhausted, checked out of life, and sacrificing my mental health and main priorities to chase success, status, and money.
(Unintentionally, of course!) While I technically made it to where I thought I wanted to be, I quickly realized it wasn’t enough and I still wasn’t satisfied. Through a few very tough seasons, I was able to learn who I am and what I’m called to do.
Today, I’m a life & business coach who helps women slow down, remember their purpose, and lean in closer to Him as they intentionally live the life He is calling them to. I am super passionate about entrepreneurship because of the freedom and flexibility it allows for those who need to work from home. I plan to start my own non-profit in the next 3 years to help women who are stuck financially create profitable online businesses instead of staying in harmful situations because they see no other options.
As I walk out His plan, I’m super grateful for all of experiences. Everything I have gone through is now helping me link arms with women who want to make impact and walk out their own individual calling.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Listen, I never thought I’d be excited to live in Corbin, Ky. But, I have fell in love with this little town and the people. And, since we aren’t from this area, we actually get to do this often for friends and family who come visit. Here’s some of our must do things:
Hopefully within the week, the weather will be warm enough to go out to Lake Laurel. My family loves to spend time on the boat and we have a blast tubing, lounging, and riding the jet skis. We would be open to spend the entire week doing a bit of that if it worked out. We’d grill out in the evenings and play some basketball or volleyball and end with smores around a bonfire.
I’d be sure we took the time to stop at Sweetie’s at least once and enjoy the downtown ice cream shop’s loaded sundaes. Not only are they picture perfect, they are SO good! And, if they are interested, we’d head on over to tour the Sander’s Cafe & Museum, the very first and original Kentucky Fried Chicken® restaurant. Whether you like KFC or not, it’s interesting to see what it was like back then.
And, if they happen to be able to stay through Sunday, I’d invite them to tag along with our family and attend church with us. As someone who has moved around a lot, I know not all churches are created equal. I’m incredibly grateful for the people, pastor, and mission of Freedom Point Church. We are on a mission to tell people about Jesus and help them recognize they don’t have to go through this life without Him.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s hard to narrow it down because there are so many. One definitely worth mentioning because it mostly gets a bad reputation is the direct sales industry.
While I no longer do direct sales, the industry allowed me to conquer fears, network, and taught me incredibly valuable business skills. Those things are still put to use today and help me pursue my dream.
Anyone who knows me before I said yes to getting out of the house and meeting new people by becoming a ‘Thirty-One’ consultant will tell you I am not who I used to be. Through that company and my time in direct sales, I learned who I truly am and have been able to lean in to the things I’m good at.
I also have to mention two books that have had a huge impact on me, Free to Focus by Michael Hyatt and Rhythms of Renewal by Rebekah Lyon. As someone with ADHD, focus has always been a struggle. I’ve also always been a girl that flies by the seat of her pants. While I can do it well, there is a better way.
Intentional living allows me to be proactive versus reactive. As I started encompassing the suggestions given, I found myself finding the time to plan. If you can plan, you can focus to complete everything on your list. The other book, Rhythms of Renewal is another big game changing book for me. As someone who has used work as a badge of honor and hustled my heart out as a way to escape other areas of my life, I had no idea the importance of rest. That book helped me flip the script and realize rest isn’t lazy. It’s actually super productive and allows us to live a sustainable life and thrive.
