We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Our most important factor is that we do everything ourselves. We are a DIY band that creates our own logos, writes our own music, and books our own shows. If we ever need help with flyers or anything in between, we try our best to keep it local and seek help from friends and family. We believe in building the local scene in Miami, full of friends, family, and good vibes. We seek to work with good-hearted people that want to make something special in Miami.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Fuákata is Spanish slang for impact, kind of like the words ‘boom’ or ‘pow’; it’s an onomatopoeia. Our music is a blend of Ska, hardcore, reggae & punk rock, with hints of Miami flavor. When all of these genres combine, the sounds smacks you all at once, like “¡Fuákata!”.
We are a do-it-yourself band that brings musicians, punk rockers, and people who love the local music scene together.
We are doing a Florida tour in August from the 18th to the 21st. We close out the tour at Casa Tiki in Calle Ocho that Sunday with several local ska bands and everyone’s invited !!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of our favorite spots in the city are right around the corner. We love eating and drinking at our local spots like Toms NFL, Brysons, and Flannigan’s.
Wynwood is the best spot for a taste of local art and graffiti, as well as banging food spots like Taco Stand and 1-800 Lucky.
There are plenty of spots for local music, depending on what you’re looking for, especially local breweries like Lincoln’s Beard and Beat Culture. But the best spots for a good time were Las Rosas (RIP) and Churchill’s Pub (RIP).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to recognize all the venues that have looked out for us, including; Bar Nancy (Our first show)
JP Alegria from Baraja (Who helped us get our first show)
Uplight Miami (helped us make our self-prepared shows look special)
All of our family and friends who support us and push us to keep going (ticket handlers, light and sound equipment, flyer makers).
