We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaniese Laylor- Bogle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaniese, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?

The shaping of my life, or my background, shaped me in wonderful ways! But, I also had some experiences that caused some negative shaping. Geographically, I was born and raised in Yallahs, St. Thomas, Jamaica. I lived in a Christian home- brought up in the Apostolic/Pentecostal faith from birth. I am from a nuclear family setting and found safety in it….until things slowly began to fall apart, and one parent was no longer home with us- dad.

My family’s strong faith in God is one thing that shaped me into being a woman of faith in all I did. I also believed in marriage and raising kids in a nuclear family, and having a family that also served the Lord. I was hard working, ambitious, a ‘go- getter’, and a leader in my own way, but a part of my build up and persona due to facing the effects of my father leaving were not so nice. There were ugly aspects of being strong willed, ‘cold’, holding heavy mistrust, angry, aggressive, carried a deep sense of shame, unworthiness & anxiety, hated physical closeness or clingy, close relationships, and became highly critical and a bit fearful of the institution of marriage.

But my background, and the values instilled by my family, especially my mother, prevailed! After years of emotional turmoil, years of masking the dysfunction and deep scars all while serving in ministry, advocating for mental health, authoring and publishing- thinking productivity could take care of the root wound, I finally pushed to uncover and heal my past wounds. It was so hard, but I went hand in hand with my Heavenly Father and the resources He made available for me to access (counseling and getting a coach). I strengthened my relationship with God and could also walk in forgiveness regarding my father. Because of embarking on my healing journey, I could move on to enjoying a healthy, satisfying marriage, and serve others in authenticity….So, huge Shout-out to my family, in- laws, the virtual space I serve and have grown on, and of course my church family!

What should our readers know about your business?

My business or my brand encompasses all of what I do and the areas I serve in. It comprises of my passion, my purpose, and my God- given calling- authoring, international speaking, mental health advocating, and serving as a trauma and relationship coach.

In greater details, I am the Founder and CEO of my online Trauma Recovery Coaching & Mentorship business (Mind, Body, Spirit- Accelerate!), where I provide in-depth 1:1 and group coaching services, masterclasses and courses on topics related to healing after trauma and rebuilding and improving relationships.

I mainly work with, and serve women who have encountered childhood trauma. I help them achieve inner peace after a life filled with internal turmoil due to past wounds, and I also help them to improve their romantic and platonic relationships.

To be specific, we specialize in are abandonment and rejection wounds, parent wounds/parental separation, interpersonal violation (like rape and molestation), anxiety, mistrust, anger, emotional unavailability and flatness, and relationship break down due to past, unhealed wounds. I focus on those areas because the two main segments of life complex trauma messes up are, one’s peace and sense of safety, and how one relates to others and ‘carry themselves’ in relationships and in the world. This arm of my business is now 3 years old.

I also the Founder and Director of a Suicide Prevention Organization based in Jamaica called Will To Live Jamaica Foundation, a 4 x Author, an International Transformational Speaker, and an Educator.

What Influenced My Passion & What Sets Me Apart

I was called to the mental health arena from a tender age. It was a calling on my life- and I felt it from an early age. I was always told or prophesied to, that I would reach the masses through my story of childhood pain that would subsequently help to heal others. I was always the ‘voice of reason’ or ‘the counselor’ in my circles.

1) What sets me apart in my area of service is that I am highly relatable, because of my own experience with childhood trauma. I can relate persona being formed around pain, rejection, and abandonment scars.
I had the experience of the fear, confusion, the migraines, body aches, chronic depression, mistrust, the paranoia, the confusion, the feelings of unworthiness and not being good enough, the aggression, the anger, the rage, the defensive behaviors, feeling numb and disconnected from myself, constantly dissociating, emotionally disconnected and not even knowing how to put into words what you are feel.

Not only did those symptoms affect me, but they were very much present in my relationship after I got marriage- and almost ruin it. I can relate!

2) Not only am I relatable but I am trained and certified in my area of specialty. I have completed many hours, and months of studying, staying up to date with current, cutting edge research as I care deeply about the quality of service I provide for those in need.

3) I am a Faith- based/ Christian Trauma Coach. My business is based on the principles of The Word of God, and I am very careful and weary of certain new age beliefs and practices. I am not swayed by some things presented, nor do I believe in or agree with some practices promoted for healing. For example, the practice of spell casting, chanting, chakras, burning of sage, card readings etc for healing. I believe, based on the Word of God, that those practice only set the afflicted up for more pain, more trouble, more trauma, more sadness, and more oppression.
My mantra is, “Jesus and my specifically designed & curtailed trauma- informed coaching is a potent enough formula and package for ANY kind of trauma.”

Is It Challenging To Do What I Do?

Is it easy to do what I do? Absolutely not. Not only do I have to be aware of physical and emotional wounds, but have to be aware of spiritual warfare- unhealed trauma is an opening for spiritual overtake. Which is why I believe this service needs the direction of God. But, I love it immensely! It is my calling, it is my passion, and it is the main purpose I was placed on this earth to fulfil.

Some of the lessons I have learnt are:

1) There is no way I can call myself a world- changer and shaker, while walking around with unhealed wounds myself. I must first experience the product in the package before I can promote it to others.

2) Living a healed life does not mean you are now super human, or you are better than others. Always be able to relate to the pain others. Compassion is key.

3) Being healed does not mean you are immune to life’s pains. You will still cry, still go through hurts etc, but what will be different is the guilt, shame, fear, and overwhelm attached to an event will be able to be handled appropriately- they won’t have the authority to keep you stuck any more.

4) Be respectful and mindful of your physical and mental limits. Not because you can carry pain and baggage well, mean you should- there is no badge of honor for emotional suffering and battering.

5) Consult God in every part of your business. I believe Therapists, Coaches, Counselors should seek to hear from God in their line of work. Why? He is one who created us; He knows us inside, out. He is the greatest Healer when all else fails!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

When I have friends and family visiting, they have to come to the Texas Roadhouse in South Carolina (where I currently reside)! Those mini, soft bread with cinnamon butter are super delicious! And of course they have to try steak 🙂

In addition, they must be taken to the Jamaican restaurant that serves scrumptious oxtail and jerk chicken. This is a must.

If it is a week-long trip, they are spending some time at the pool, different parks for sight- seeing and family activities, or the State Park to get a historical view of the state, and most definitely they will be visiting downtown where are a plethora of attraction and restaurants, night- life.
One of the hit spots downtown is a unique ice cream shop called ‘Sweet Cream’.

For a wind-down kind of enjoyment, going strawberry picking is a nice activity, or watching canoes on the river, fishing, or painting are other soothing options.

These are some of the most fun places to hang out in my area, in my estimation.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

My family- relatives, grandmother, my mother, siblings, my husband and my two girls who have really been my main supporters.
