We had the good fortune of connecting with Aurora Rivera-Arguinzoni and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aurora, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After 25 years of a career in Journalism and as a mother of two, I needed a path change in order to enjoy my kids before they left for College. With that in mind and heart, I started taking online courses on business: marketing, market segmentation, and solidarity economy, among others. At the same time, I felt a call to share with my community every possible strategy to communicate their struggles or achievements in order to be publishable material and developed the course Acceso a Medios 101 (Media Access 101). The first business that I conceived and developed together with my friend and college Maricelis Rivera Santos was Access All Services, founded in 2016, two months after the first session of Acceso a Medios 101 was offered. Being back in school for my MBA while on my full-time job as a journalist, balancing with the responsibilities of a wife and a mother was kind of hectic, yet my spirit pushed me to become an entrepreneur. Then hurricane María came and devastated Puerto Rico, where I am originally from. My family started to transition to a new life in South Florida and that’s when I decide to take a leap of faith and embrace my new journey, leaving my career in journalism behind for the freedom that provides been my own boss. As a communication and marketing consultant for professionals and organizations in Puerto Rico and Florida, I have been able to fulfill both of my passions: finding and sharing newsworthy stories while growing businesses.
What should our readers know about your business?
As a communication and marketing consultant, I have been able to help individuals, families in distress, government and non-governmental organizations, labor unions, start-ups, and different size businesses and corporations get the best from their resources and assets, sometimes starting with the most basic communication and time management skills, but also with a very focalized business and media intelligence. More than 25 years of experience in research, mass media production, journalism, and storytelling, help me identify their strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats, to get the strongest angles of their stories and messages in order to put them in front of the masses, but also to provide editors and reporters with really valuable content because I get them both, I know their needs, their pains, and their standards, I have been in both ends. As a seasoned journalist -1996 Journalist of the Year for the Overseas Press Club of Puerto Rico- I am an avid researcher, curious, critic, and strict on ethics and quality control. At the same time, as a newly formed marketer, my ways are agile and adaptable to novel challenges. For example, our clients were able to execute virtual press conferences, round tables with specialized media, and even conventions, mobilized thousands of volunteers for a coastal cleanup and celebrated musical and Christmas events in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As an islander from the Caribbean, the beach will be a first, but not a very busy one, a relaxing spot more on the south side of Miami Beach. I also love Las Olas Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, the slow and beautiful Weston City area, and the unique gem of the world located in South Florida: The Everglades, seen from the Vista View Park in Davie or the Conservation Levee Greenway at Markham Park on a sunset.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family is my main inspiration, my community, and the Puerto Ricans with their infinite resilience. I live thankful for every person that has touched my life or that has let me touch theirs: my spiritual mentors, my friends, my teachers, my editors, my friend and business partner Maricelis Rivera Santos, and my clients, each one of those that deposit their trust in me.
