We had the good fortune of connecting with Makayla Wheeler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Makayla, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Some people thought that film school or college was the way to go and gave me that advice; however, to be in the arts and entrepreneurship arena you really don’t need a degree. I think the culture is moving toward a lot of online self education as well as personal mentorship, as opposed to a traditional 4 year college.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My name is Makayla Wheeler, and I am the owner and founder of MGW Productions.
From a super young age, it was very clear that I would be doing something creative as my career. Many people asked me how I got started with this business…it all began for me at the young age of 12-13 when I took horseback riding lessons on my horse Shotgun. My friends and I would take our iPod Nanos out and capture footage of our adventures. Out of these adventurous roots, came my passion for filmmaking. One of the biggest challenges was just being so young and feeling like you’re not being taken seriously for that reason.
Now though many years later, my great love for filming has grown into a production company, MGW Productions where I work with a variety of different clients which have taken me to places like Yosemite, California and the Bahamas. I’ve also had the pleasure of work with clients such as Ron Jon Surf Shop, The Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis and the Bahama Beach Club. My favorite projects are story driven and center around the ocean or adventurous in the great outdoors. Creating is one of my keenest pleasures and brings me joy everyday. I do ground, drone and underwater cinematography which I feel can be unique having all three skill sets.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Randy Baker – he has been my film mentor since high school and I really wouldn’t be where I am without his generosity and wisdom in the craft of filmmaking.
