We had the good fortune of connecting with Alberto Cardoso and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alberto, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
What truly makes me happy is being with my family. They are my foundation, my refuge, and the reason I find renewed strength each day to keep growing. Sharing moments, conversations, laughter, and silences with them gives me a sense of fulfillment I can’t find anywhere else.

I am also deeply happy when I’m creating art. Painting, drawing, photography… each of these forms of expression allows me to connect with what I feel and transform it into something tangible. Art is my way of breathing, of understanding the world, and of finding beauty even in the simplest things.

Furthermore, being in contact with nature is another of my greatest sources of happiness. Getting lost among trees, observing the light, listening to animals, or simply feeling the wind fills me with calm and, at the same time, inspires me to create new works. Animals, in particular, have a sensitivity that moves me and awakens ideas in me that then become art.

In short, I am happy when I am with those I love, when I am creating, and when I am connected with nature. All of that, together, forms the essence of what makes me feel alive.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a young artist still learning and experimenting. After graduating from the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba, I have gone through different phases and styles, experimenting and searching for the one I identify with most. It has been a long process of over 20 years, full of experimentation and mentors who have greatly supported me. Today, I am in a phase of my work where I focus on realism, constructing pieces with few elements that tell a story to the viewer, primarily using animals as protagonists, mostly birds, a symbol of freedom in its purest form. I also frequently use abstract backgrounds with loose, fluid brushstrokes, experimenting with textures and colors to give the work greater visual interest. I believe that these details and the construction of color planes with loose brushstrokes make my work unique.

Throughout this journey, I have learned that the only way to achieve your goals is by working hard, always striving to be in a creative process, supporting and learning from those who want to help you, being humble, and being grateful for what life gives you. My goal is to transcend history, for my work to be recognized by all, and to always have a message to give; art has the ability to communicate and change minds so that we can all be better.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to give a friend a week-long itinerary, we would definitely do sports. I think sports strengthen the body and mind and help you relax. We would also go exploring natural areas and hiking to reconnect with nature. We would visit art galleries, meet up with friends, and good food, good wine, and good conversation topics are the key to having a good time.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to be part of this project. And of course, throughout my artistic career, there have been many people to thank: teachers, friends, mentors, but especially my parents, who have been there from the beginning, giving their unconditional support and being my most demanding critics, pushing me to keep growing and demanding more of myself. To them and everyone who has been by my side on this journey, THANK YOU.
