Meet Alexandra Shatokhina | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Shatokhina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexandra, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the base of success is to give. Not get me wrong, I m about giving attention to projects, sharing your talent, make people around you involved. Let’s talk about sharing our time. When you invest the most important resource you always get something back. If you invest your time, knowledge, talent, love, connections and patient, you can get back much more than something. You can get back success. I believe that almost everyone can achieve success by given enough resources.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My artistic practice is based on three main features. First, I consider the creation of painting as the building of sculpture, that’s why I often use thick layers of paint to give it volume and the feeling of third dimension. Sometimes for this reason I also use real things or stones inside of the painting, so I blur the line between two different genres in art: painting and sculpture.
The second feature is the decomposition of nature to the abstraction. This part of my method is also about putting the viewer in the situation between. The line between abstract and figurative art today is also very vague but for me it is important to go in this question to nature and not social or technological environment. As post-internet art is dealing with mixture of everything and we have already got used to this, but the look at the nature as also the environment for the experimentation is quite rare nowadays.
And the third thing which is connected with two I spoke before is the hedonism of watching the art. Than the conventionalities disappear and the viewer does need to analyze neither the art system nor the image itself he or she can stick to the emotions and feelings coming from the inner-self. I would call this process the art meditation when you can watch the art piece and go to your own feelings.
Of Cours it was not easy to follow the dream. It is interesting and challenging. If I will look back I wold say myself believe in myself more and do less compromises.
My exploration of color manifests into contemporary sculptural works of art that connect the spiritual, physical, and mental planes.
I bring great spiritual affiliation in my work and life. On my journey, I have brought alive the conceptuality behind nature’s rarest of colors, texture, stone, and energy.
In my abstractions, each tone, texture, and composition symbolize unique emotions.
My deep interests and avenues of personal inquiry are connected to metamodernism theory, world religions, mystical practices, ancient scripture. My art is inspired by famous artists such as Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer. I also admire the works of her contemporaries Turrell, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Doigand Anish Kapoor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Miami with all my heart. One of my favorite spots it is ocean of course.
Life by the ocean is priceless. I wold take my guests to South Point. We will sit outside at Smith&Wollensky and enjoy beautiful sunset with cruise ships going to the ocean. Next day we will probably walk at Brickle, stop by Novikov, checking skyscrapers and night life. We should definitely boating one day. Miami looks amazing from the water. Also we will check graffiti in Wynwood and enjoy shopping in Design district.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I appreciate people who believe in myself from the beginning. The most important person in my life is my mom. She did impossible all her life. She inspire and support me, and she gives me freedom to do what I want to do. For example, when I finished 1 year in law school and decided to quit and went to art school, she was totally on my side. I met on my way beautiful souls who helps me find my way. It was my teachers, curators, artists, gallerists. I want to say thank you to them and wish the best.
