We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Morales and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We started Self Love Club as a way to create community around the things we love. To promote wellness, and create experiences to help people feel good in their bodies.
Mallory and I met in college, we were roommates when we studied abroad in China for 2 semesters, which lead us to travel the world together. After graduating from FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, we went our separate ways but always stayed in touch while finding our own paths into the world of wellness. Years later we were both in a place where we wanted to start something new, to start working towards the dream that we had envisioned since our time abroad together.
Mallory and I have always wanted to have a retreat center someday, so we started thinking of ways to actively start working towards that grandiose goal. We thought about what could we do right now, that doesn’t entail us moving to the jungle at this very moment. That’s how Self Love Club was born.
On a deeper level, we want to help people explore their inner Self. To get in touch with a deeper part of themselves, to give them the time and space to practice self love, in hopes of making the world a better place. With each event, we put meditation and self exploration at the forefront, while still making it social and fun.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Organizing events is definitely an art form, so much goes into planning and making sure that you are creating the right ambience in order for people feel comfortable. There has definitely been lots of learning curves over the last 2 years and I think each event, class, or retreat serves as an opportunity to observe and take note on how we can improve the experience.
To be completely honest, I think one of the hardest challenges to overcome was being let down when we had little to no attendance at some events in the beginning. It’s easy to get into your head and think that you should give up because it can feel like no one is interested in what you are doing.
Sticking to the process, and having full faith in our events, no matter who showed up was huge. I reminded myself that if I was able to make just one persons day better, that was a gift. Remembering that I’m not in it for the numbers, but truly just to help others allowed me to let go of the pressure to fight for growth. With that mindset, the growth has slowly happened on its own and I’m so grateful for each person that has come out and supported us.
I’m so proud of how far we’ve come and to know that Self Love Club events have helped so many people see wellness and meditation in a new, fun and social way. The process of building this community has been incredibly rewarding, after each event I leave on the greatest high knowing that we provided a special experience for our guests. Helping people find some ease and relaxation from their busy lives, seeing them smile and connect with each other in spaces that we create is the best. The process of owning a small business is ever evolving and we are looking forward to continuing to grow and make a positive impact in people lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend come visit me in Miami, we would definitely be hitting the beach ! We’d spend the day by the water in Key Biscayne and then have drinks at The Cleat in Bill Bags State Park for sunset. After that we’d go see some live music, somewhere on 8th street or Coral Way. The next day we’d walk around Coconut Grove, have brunch at Green Street and end the day with yoga at Flow State Studios !
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to shout out Mallory Morse, who is the 2nd half of the Self Love Club and runs the St. Augustine community. If we hadn’t done this together, it simply wouldn’t exist. We continuously count on each other for moral support, to ease doubts, and to encourage each others creativity. It’s such a blessing to be in this with a great friend, to have ease in communication, and to mentor each other through the process of entrepreneurship together.
