We had the good fortune of connecting with Angela Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angela, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba and immigrated with my mother, aunt, and grandparents to the United States when I was four years old. This journey was far from easy, leaving behind my father. I was not aware at that age how much my life was going to change, for the better. As young a immigrant I saw the challenges my family faced from language barriers to simply acculturating to a country 90 miles away from their beloved island. This motivated me to be everything they hoped I would become.
A couple years after arriving to Florida my mother remarried my amazing stepfather. And shortly my beautiful baby sister arrived. I would often ask to sleepover my grandparents house. That being said, I was very close to my beloved grandparents. They are my role models.
I was always listening in to my family’s “drama” and I was always so interested in how they got to that point in their life and what would happen after. My fascination for peoples thought process grew and that’s when I decided to study Psychology. I graduated from Carlos Albizu University with BS in Psychology with a minor in Children and a MS in Marriage and family therapy. I have 6 years of experience working with South Florida’s most vulnerable populations. I’ve worked at a women’s homeless shelter, early intervention, and as a therapist intern.
After completing my internship as a therapist, I realized I wanted to continue working closely with individuals. As a coach I want to focus where my client finds themselves at the current moment in their relationships and work together to get them to become the best version possible.
What should our readers know about your business?
Welcome to Romance Flora. My name is Angela and I am a relationship coach with over 6 years of experience working with our most vulnerable population in South Florida. I’ve worked as a Social Worker and completed a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. In 2021, I had the opportunity to work as an MFT intern for a private practice in Miami. I continued working with children, teens, middle aged individuals, and couples dealing with anxiety, depression, relationship issues and divorce. I provided 1-on-1 therapy, family and couples therapy using primarily CBT.
After networking and speaking to several colleagues, my heart shifted to starting a business, something with my “touch”. I went ahead and enrolled in a coaching certification course. Honestly, it was so much fun. I learned the benefits of providing these services and definitely felt like a match made in heaven. Once I received the coaching certification, I had no idea where to start. I decided to stay in on a Saturday night and I just laid in bed telling myself I was going to fail because I couldn’t even come up with a name. I was so overwhelmed, I started fixing my closest and ran into old photographs of my grandparents. I took this as a sign. The photograph speaks volume, just pure love. I thought to myself of every obstacle and triumphs my grandparents went through together. Their romance flourished through the good, bad, and even ugly. So there is was, the birth of Romance Flora.
Along the way I’ve learned doubt gives us room to navigate the situation and grow from it. Remember doubt should be used as motivation to push through.
I want the world to know that love conquers all. I don’t only mean romantically. Loving yourself is fundamental. We cannot pour from an empty cup. I say this because I’ve personally been in my clients shoes. I too, went to marriage therapy and coaching at one point. Yes, I was married to my high school sweetheart. We grew up together for twelve years. We tried and exhausted ways to save our marriage, however we decided to divorce. It wasn’t an easy decision. Grieving my marriage was definitely a challenge. I never imagined I would be in that situation. But I am grateful for that chapter of my life. Remember you are able to create whatever narrative you want, my story continues. Romance Flora supports individuals and couples in learning vital skills for relating, especially in marriages and romantic partnerships. I assist individuals develop conflict resolution skills and offer tools for self care.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Of course this is South Florida, where the sun don’t stop, a beach day is must. My friends and I usually enjoy having a picnic at South Pointe Beach and ride the city bikes around the park and make our way to the ocean. My friends and I love traveling and trying new things. So we love supporting small local restaurants, our go to Thai restaurant is Lung Yai, located in the heart of Calle Ocho. Of course, we make our way to Ball & Chain to dance some merengue. If you want some drinks we head over to Wynwood where sky’s the limit when it comes to bar hopping. Recently, my go to bar is Freehold Miami, I love their spacious courtyard band and their delicious 1970s NYC inspired pizza shop. I just love Miami, and the people!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Romance Flora is dedicated to my beloved grandparents, Mario and Domitila. They were married for 50 years. Nevertheless, they had their fair share of highs and lows. But their commitment to be the best version of themselves helped their romance flourish. I wouldn’t be who I am today, if it wasn’t for them. A true testimony that love conquers all.
