Hi Anni, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Another decision that significantly contributed to my journey to success was keeping my commitment to authenticity in every aspect of my business. It wasn’t just about creating products for me; it was about infusing them with the genuine essence of my heritage, my roots, and my personal journey. For example, when it comes to crafting our products, I choose to hand pour every candle, form every soap bar, and curate every scrub with meticulous love and care. Rather than outsourcing production to a private label, I prioritize the personal touch and attention to detail that can only come from artisanal craftsmanship. This commitment not only ensures the superior quality and authenticity of our products but also reflects our dedication to preserving traditional techniques and supporting local artisans.

By staying true to my values and vision, I forged a deeper connection with my community and customers. Each product became a reflection of not just craftsmanship but of the rich culture and tradition that shaped my business and I as a whole. What distinguishes us most is our fusion of Cuban heritage with the vibrant spirit of the Florida Keys, which is evident in every handcrafted product we create. From body care items to artisanal candles, each creation exudes warmth and vibrancy, a testament to our unique blend of cultural influences.

The path to where we are today wasn’t without its challenges, but overcoming them has been a testament to our resilience and determination. Navigating the intricacies of entrepreneurship, sourcing natural and ethical materials, and building a brand from the ground up taught us valuable lessons about staying true to our roots and forging genuine connections with our community and customers. These experiences shaped us into the business we are today, rooted in authenticity and driven by our passion for sharing our culture with the world.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For a trip to South Florida, I’d start by taking my best friend to Islas Canarias, a beloved restaurant just steps away from my family home. We’d indulge in their famous croquetas de la casa, which to me are the best in Miami, along with their delicious shrimp stuffed avocados. After enjoying our meal we’d venture to Miccosukee Casino for a night of gaming and entertainment amidst the captivating landscape of the Florida Everglades. At the casino, we’d immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of slot machines, poker tables, and live entertainment. The next day, we’d head to Le Fournil, a charming bakery steeped in tradition. My family has been going to this bakery for generations, drawn in by their authentic French bread, pastries, and heavenly spinach empanadas. Of course, no visit would be complete without enjoying their signature cafe con leche, a perfect blend of rich espresso and creamy milk. Before wrapping up our adventure in Miami, we’d make a stop at Dolphin Mall, a premier shopping destination offering a vast array of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. From designer boutiques to outlet stores, we’d indulge in some retail therapy and perhaps catch a movie at CMX Theater or enjoy a delicious meal at the Cheesecake Factory to cap off the night.

The next day, we’d drive down to the Florida Keys, the home of Keys Koquito. We’d start our day with a delicious breakfast at The Hideout, savoring their delicious french toast with eggs, bacon, and house fries while looking at the oceanside. For lunch, we’d head to Mike’s BBQ food truck on mile marker 101, where we’d feast on a delicious melt-in-your-mouth brisket meal paired with homemade mac and cheese and baked beans. After filling our bellies, we’d embark on an unforgettable adventure right next door at Dolphins Plus Bayside, where we’d have the opportunity to watch the dolphins and learn about marine conservation efforts. As the day winds down, we’d treat ourselves to a taste of traditional Cuban cuisine at the Sunset Cafe in Tavernier, indulging in classic dishes bursting with flavor and authenticity such as their milanesa de pollo (chicken milanese) or their pan con bistec (steak sandwich).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to take this opportunity to dedicate my shoutout to the most influential people in my life: my family. Growing up alongside them in Miami profoundly influenced the way I perceive the world, offering me invaluable insights and lessons that continue to resonate with me to this day. Miami’s vibrant culture instilled within me a profound appreciation for my family’s heritage, fostering a deep connection to our roots and traditions. Witnessing their unwavering dedication and relentless work ethic has been a constant source of inspiration, motivating me to pursue my dreams with determination and resilience. Their sacrifices and commitment have laid the foundation for the life I lead today, shaping me into the person I am proud to be.

First and foremost among them is my mother, Yolie. From the very beginning, she has been the driving force behind Keys Koquito’s journey. Her entrepreneurial spirit and unwavering support have been my guiding light. She not only inspired me to pursue my dreams but also provided her guidance and mentorship every step of the way. Her years of experience as a small business owner have served as a wellspring of knowledge for me, offering insights and advice that have proven instrumental in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship.
