We had the good fortune of connecting with Attie, Megan, Olivia, Callie Crews, Keller, Bacardi, Crews and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Attie, Megan, Olivia, Callie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Attie and Callie’s mom was diagnosed with melanoma five years ago. Since melanoma is one of the most serious types of skin cancer we decided we needed to educate people to help lower the incidence rates of this preventable cancer. We originally wanted to target teenagers and young adults to teach them how to protect their skin so we decided that a bracelet would be both fashionable and also a great reminder. We altered the shape of a bead that has UV detecting polymers that changes color when it detects ultra violet rays from the sun so that it would be a colorful reminder to put on sunscreen. We wanted to raise awareness and funds and with One Change you can make a difference.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Unlike many other organizations, we are a non profit and we donate 100% of our proceeds to Melanoma Research. We have donated $75,000 and raised over $80,000. We have been lucky to work with other nonprofits and hospitals that have helped us continue to share our mission, raise money, and they help set us apart from other organizations. Another thing that helps set us apart from other organizations is that we are young and we started out non profit when we were in high school.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would take them to the Perez Art museum, Chicken Kitchen for lunch, Brickell City Center, and a Heat Game.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to recognize our advisory board (Evans Crews, Elizabeth Bacardi, and Lynne Keller) and the MRF. Without their support and help we would not be as successful as we are today.
