We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika J. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Damn that’s a great question because as an independent artist, we always think about whether we should keep going or give up. Sometimes it is a battle in the mind because there are moments that make you want to throw your hands up and walk away and then there are those high moments that inspire you to keep going. The best way I can answer this question is where does the peace reside? When I thought about giving up on music, I didn’t have peace with it because I love what I do, I love creating, I love singing, I simply love music and the idea of not continuing my passion did not bring any kind of peace. So I decided to “keep going” and that is where my peace lives because I am not giving up on myself. I have so much to show myself and the world!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about? -What sets me apart is simply being ME!! I always try to “Out do” myself, for example, when it comes to songwriting I always challenge myself to do something different. It could be vocals, songwriting structure, adding a cool instrument etc., I want my creative journey to be authentic! What I am most proud of is my ability to utilize my resources as an independent artist. As an independent artist, there are times a lot of duties fall on the artist and that can be stressful but I have learned throughout this journey to utilize what I have it make it look damn good! For example, I remember I couldn’t afford a photoshoot so I had an old Nikon camera and I learned how to do my own set designs and photoshoots because I lacked the finances to hire a professional but I utilized my resources to make my own photoshoot happen. I’m excited about a lot of things!! I am EXCITED TO SHARE THIS NEW MUSIC I HAVE BEEN HOLDING ONTO! How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? -Networking, studying, educating myself, going to events, performing, talking to musicians, writing my vision down, giving myself deadlines, asking for help, being a student, being a teacher, I can go on and on and I am still doing ALL of this!! And it is never easy but I always ask myself “How bad do you want this?” How did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? -The power of PRAYER is everything! My relationship with God is so important to me! Sometimes I just vent to God about my frustrations and my obstacles!! Talking to God is what helps me overcome challenges. Also, talking to other artists who can relate has helped me SO MUCH!! Also, knowing when to REST is vital!! These are some key factors that continue to help me overcome challenges. The lessons I’ve also learned in the journey, is to SPEAK UP because going through any kind of sadness or challenge alone is not ok, it is important to talk to someone about what you are going through. Also, the power of rest helps me to recharge my mind, body and soul. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? The world needs to know that there is someone in this world that they can relate too!!! I want the world to know through my brand and story that purpose is dope as fuck!! That healing can happen, that being Black is a celebration, being Haitian is a celebration as well! I want my supporters and the world to know that “Tamika J. is one of the reasons why I chose to not give up on myself”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am still getting to know Los Angeles, California so I am limited to areas to visit!! But I would take them to Leimert Park where everything is black owned!! and then drive to Joshua Tree , bring our speakers, instruments, drinks, and food and look at the stars while jamming to some good music!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Haitian Community deserves all the shout out! We all are familiar of the hashtag #freeHaiti, in effort to raise more awareness of the current crisis going on in Haiti. Many people are using the hashtag #freehaiti to express their support in the movement. My desire is have more individuals show their support not only by using the hashtag but to educate themselves on the beauty of Haiti. Unfortunately, the news and media only highlight the issues of Haiti but they rarely show the glory, the beauty and the power of Haiti. My culture has been one of the key factors that has shaped me into the woman and artist I am today. So I want to shout out the Country of Haiti, I want to shout out all of my Haitian people, and all the individuals who have shown support to 🇭🇹 Haiti ❤️
