We had the good fortune of connecting with Brazil Raine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brazil, how do you think about risk?
I always knew I wanted to be a makeup artist, but getting there was never and still isn’t easy. I think it’s always been about taking risks, some greater than others, to find work/life balance and do what makes me happiest. It’s funny, though, because after 10 years, I still feel like every risk brings about reward, whether in the form of a failure I can learn from or a win I directly benefit from. One of the biggest risks happened in the beginning when I was 20 years old with a desk job and guaranteed salary, leaving that pay security for a minimum wage salon job then getting the boot from my house the day after. But it taught me the biggest lesson; surrounding yourself with people who lift you up will always be the best way to bounce back. I crashed with my boyfriend (now hubby) and began assisting my boss on weddings on the side. Before you know it I was making what I made before and then some. My most recent risk was buying a camera and macro lens to start shooting my own work in my down time. It has provided a fun new creative outlet and allowed me to explore a new world of makeup that I think will change how I work in the future. So all risks have their rewards; It’s about being willing to go for it!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would define myself as a clean beauty artist that definitely loves to play with color. I think, like most artists, what sets me apart is the path I took to get here. I feel we all experience such different things and places along the way and for me, coming from a region primarily boasting bridal and cosmetic retail, I needed to break free and work in studio doing fun and creative work. I made it a point early in my career to start testing and working with other people in major cities, ensuring I was always surrounded by people who were more talented or developed than me. I traveled literally anywhere I could go on my own dime to build my portfolio. I think I will always test and work for collaborative images. I feel it’s the only way we can only improve in our art.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am obsessed with the ocean and all its critters. So first and foremost, its the ocean for me! And I’m not the type to sunbathe and sip cocktails on the beach either. I want to be in the water, swimming to the sandbar, snorkel and fins at the ready. We have so many beautiful places in Miami, but I am always down for a day trip to the keys for a little change of pace. The drive there is so breathtaking; it’s almost worth it just to see the water passing by. Since we are in Miami, though, a little night life is necessary! I love Palace on Ocean Drive for a fun show and great drinks. It’s a guaranteed good time for everyone! I also love taking friends to see the Wynwood Walls and walk through the neighborhood. It’s hard to decide on my favorite food options here because there are so many excellent choices, but my main favorites are Alma Mexicana and Big Pink in South Beach. I used to go there every time I would visit from out of town; both have great service and food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my beautiful and multi-talented friend, Kat Connolly, who nominated me for this interview. Also a special thanks to of all my friends who have stuck it out with me through my glow up in the makeup industry. I appreciate you all so much, Danielle Kelley, Angie Mehlhorn, Bri Soffa, and Chelsea Marie. Also major thanks to my husband, Ryan who literally bought me my first pro brushes and kit. He is my #1 supporter and always lifts me up, believing in me when I can’t see the goodness.
