We had the good fortune of connecting with Brownie Serra and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brownie, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by my mom Silvia. As a single parent she has always been my biggest cheerleader and advisor. She was seriously blessed with the most amazing patience and wisest words. Her determination to and perseverance motivated me to be the same. Throughout my photography adventure I have encountered many obstacles that made me think twice if this was the path to go. But, no matter what my mothers advise and love have reminded me that no task is ever too hard or impossible. As long as we go into the world with a kind heart and work hard no one can take that energy away from you.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a family and engagement photographer I think what sets me apart is my personality. I have created a whole career over a nickname and my clients love that. Brownie is like a magical person who is super optimistic and loves to laugh. My sessions are full of happiness, silliness and warmth. As much as I love candids I strive to take images that 20, 30, 50 years from now still look true to life and are traditional; because that never goes out of style. One of my biggest challenges has been gossip in this industry. South Florida already is a dog eat dog city but, I have been criticized, made fun of and full on chewed up. Good thing I am 305 til’ I die and my skin is so thick. That’s not to say it makes you wonder is this the right path for me. Thankfully with my awesome support system and hard work I have been able to look passed all the negativity. Like anyone else you have moments of doubt and insecurity. I am thankful that with faith, hope and God I have been able to look to the future and leave the past behind. The biggest lesson I have learned is: Stay true to yourself. Don’t ever let anyone take your light away from you. I want the world to know that life is not peachy. But, the hardships we encounter can make you a better and stronger person. My brand and story is my legacy. I’m not leaving millions behind nor have ever gone viral. But, I am leaving behind beautiful memories for all the amazing families and couples I have shot to date. The emotions that my clients get when they look back at their images is exactly why I am a photographer. It’s a beautiful art that not everyone can do. I don’t just take a picture, I capture love, laughter, sadness, excitement etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have been a Yelp Elite for 3 years now so finding the best spots in my city is one of my favorite hobbies! South Florida has so much to offer! We are such a melting pot of culture! One of my favorite areas is down in Miami’s Little Havana. I would start by making a pit stop at Versailles and get my cuban fix. Whether it is croquetas, un cafecito or arroz imperial – everything is delicious and authentic. Then I’d make my way to Azucar Ice Cream Company for the best ice cream ever! Their Cuban inspired flavors are so yummy! Platano maduro, Abuela Maria, Manteca are all foods made into ice cream! If you are born and raised in Miami this place is brings back good childhood memories. Then I’d make a pit stop at Cubaocho for a the best mojito in South Florida! You can relax while listening to a live band and check out the walls filled with beautiful local art. I’d finish off at the Mighty Bar nearby off 22nd Street for some local brewskis and the huge burgers! I have always had a great time at this bar and met the nicest people! South Florida is filled with so many vibrant and rich places. I can go on for days about how amazing this city is!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend Iris has been the best assistant since I started shooting back in 2010. She truly is the real MVP. She has carried doors, couches, balloons, you name it! She calls my car a clown car because you never know what you will find in it and how much comes out of it! Her friendship means the world to me. We’ve been friends for 20 years! Love her to pieces.
