We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla Berkowitz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carla, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I’m a risk taker I admit it but I also trust my intuition & it guides me. Timing & Follow-Through is EVERYTHING…and knowing how to recognize opportunities is a skill I’ve developed. BUT…most importantly, I’m also extremely patient. I’m able to move the deadline/needle/project/idea to a more appropriate or different time without much drama and without the damaging the project.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m the Executive Producer of the highly anticipated independent feature film Critical Thinking, Directed by and Starring the Emmy-award winning actor John Leguizamo. My partner Harvey R. Chaplin and I spent over 20 years developing Critical Thinking from story to screenplay to film. My company, NRSP, produced Critical Thinking and is developing other Aspirational projects. I started producing Fitness Videos in the 1990’s producing over 15 internationally sold videos from. Anyone who watched BET’s Caribbean Rhythms in the 1990’s knows Jamaica Me S’wet Fitness Video series. I became an Audio Engineer, when I was 48 graduating from SAE and specializing in “Demos in a Day”. I’m also the Founder of Perfect Balance World, a Physics based Yoga/Athleisure Brand focused on introducing Physics-Based Yoga clothing engineered to make sure you never fall out of a yoga pose ever again. In 1999 she pioneered the use of hip-hop, rap and indie rock to replace traditional meditative music for yoga. I have four children who have no idea what to do with me. I also have Lupus, and it sucks, but creating stuff helps and it’s basically the least interesting thing about me. Ask about my Vinyl Wall instead!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, anybody could give you the tourist experience, if that’s what you want. Museums, nightclubs, art galleries. But in my opinion, you can’t come to Miami without having arepas and cafe-con-leche for breakfast at least once. We could go shopping too and if you step off Biscayne Boulevard, you’ll find amazing places filled with items you won’t find anywhere else. And at night, my absolute MUST DO is going to the Luna Star Cafe for open mic night. I know, I know, but hear me out. They’ve got an awesome community of people who have been going there for years, and they’re so welcoming, whether you want to sit and drink beer and listen, or even if you want to get up there and give a little performance yourself! My son and I used to perform there under the band name Absolutely Not (because that’s what he would say to half of my song suggestions!) and it’s still one of the places I cherish most in Miami.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A shoutout to my partner Harvey R. Chaplin who has patiently and generously supported my 22 year effort to bring these 2 projects to fruition! Partners for 30 years, we spent over 20 years developing Critical Thinking! Simultaneously, we also developed Perfect Balance World. Another shoutout goes to my 4 children who have no idea what to do with me (in a good way)! These projects are actually older than they are & they’ve heard me talking about it their entire lives!
