We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Lizano and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carolina, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I am a firm believer in the word “Meraki,” a Greek term that encapsulates the essence of infusing one’s work with soul, creativity, and love. To embody Meraki is to put a part of oneself into one’s endeavors and to approach tasks with passion and authenticity. This concept resonates deeply with me, as I believe that loving what you do is integral to excelling in it.

The most critical factor behind my success and the success of my personal brand is my commitment to being community-driven. I firmly believe in the principle that doing good results in receiving double. This belief has guided me in fostering collaboration, gaining trust and credibility, and creating a supportive network to reinforce the positive impact I aim to bring to my community and beyond.

When I mention that “when you do good, you receive double,” I am referring to the idea that positive actions not only benefit others but also bring about personal fulfillment and rewards. This belief drives me to engage in activities that uplift and support those around me, knowing that these actions contribute to my own growth and well-being in ways that may not always be immediately tangible.

Fostering collaboration is a key aspect of being community-driven. I recognize the value of teamwork, shared goals, and diverse perspectives in achieving meaningful outcomes. By working together with others, I can leverage collective strengths, foster creativity and innovation, and tackle challenges more effectively than I could alone. Collaboration not only enhances the impact of my efforts but also creates lasting connections and opportunities for mutual growth.

Gaining trust and credibility within the community is essential for building strong relationships and establishing a positive reputation. By being transparent, accountable, and consistent in my actions, I earn the trust of others and cultivate credibility as a reliable and ethical individual. This trust forms the basis of lasting relationships that are built on mutual respect, understanding, and support.

Creating a supportive network is another crucial element of being community-driven. Surrounding oneself with like-minded individuals who share similar values and goals provides a sense of belonging, encouragement, and shared purpose. This network becomes a source of inspiration, guidance, and collaboration, reinforcing my motivation and resilience in the face of challenges.

Incorporating the concept of Meraki into my work and interactions enriches my approach to community-driven success. By infusing passion, creativity, and authenticity into everything I do, I not only enhance the quality of my contributions but also foster deeper connections with those around me. This dedication to putting a part of myself into my endeavors, coupled with a focus on collaboration, trust, and support, forms the bedrock of my personal brand and the values that guide my journey towards positive impact and meaningful growth within my community and beyond.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started as a part-time teller and quickly climbed the ranks to become a personal banker, excelling in my work but craving more than just bonuses. I found a deep passion for small businesses and their operations, but after two years at the branch level, I felt like I was stuck. Seeking new opportunities for growth, I made a bold move to Boston, Massachusetts, where I discovered a love for the healthcare industry due to the state’s focus on healthcare.

As a queer Latina in a field dominated by white males, I faced challenges and uncertainty about my career path, especially being far from familiar faces. Despite these obstacles, I found success through networking events, community connections, and my growing interest in healthcare. Switching to healthcare business banking presented constant learning opportunities, particularly during the pandemic. Adapting to ever-changing banking regulations and dealing with the distance from my loved ones tested my mental strength. Throughout it all, I sought ways to support the Latino and LGBTQ communities beyond my job.

After the pandemic, I found my passion for community-driven networking, which helped me clarify my values as a banker and as an individual. This process deepened my understanding of my purpose and the positive impact I can make on the community.

The lessons I’ve learned are a testament to the importance of resilience, determination, and flexibility. My journey underscores the significance of building connections, networking effectively, and finding meaning in my work.

What I want people to know about me is my unwavering dedication to personal and professional growth, my commitment to assisting small businesses and marginalized communities, and my ability to bounce back from challenges. My story is about perseverance, authenticity, and making a difference in the world.

My journey is an inspiration for others to embrace their unique identities, push beyond boundaries, and create meaningful change in their lives and communities.

I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my high school friends who have been by my side for the past 22 years since I moved to the USA at the age of 15. We established our friendship in high school, and over the years, our group has grown stronger, with some friends now married with kids. They have been my confidants, mentors, cheerleaders, and a source of encouragement. Their unwavering support and friendship have been instrumental in shaping who I am today.

I also want to acknowledge my family for their continuous support and acceptance of me for who I am.
