We had the good fortune of connecting with Catherine Morrisey Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Catherine, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
It might sound pie in the sky, but I think if you really love something and it’s an expression of your soul, you never really quit or give it up. I threatened to shut down Conjure in my head so many times (at my staff meetings with myself). What I’ve learned is that the call to quit or give up doesn’t necessarily mean failure, but it is a loud call to transform how the work is being done. Burn out is real, too, especially when we love the damn thing and know it could make a difference in the world. It’s an act of compassion, especially early on when volatility is part of the game, to trust the currents and not shame yourself for minimizing how much attention you give your business. There’s no shame in earning money through the Man or some mindless but reliable source, either. If you really love it, the work is always brewing within. Eventually the time will come for it to be shared and emphasized again. And you’ll actually have the energy to move it forward.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Conjure is a place for magic and spiritual connection. I offer a variety of services that aim to promote inner-clarity, confidence, and compassion. Services includes tarot and astrology readings, as well as energy healing sessions that connect people to guides, ancestors, and purpose. I also have an apothecary line of alcohol-free tinctures for people who feel called to connect more deeply with plants. My goal is to help people remember their divinity and intuition, and to do so in a way that sparks curiosity and gets people acquainted with their spiritual gifts.
Like many small businesses, Conjure was a distant dream for a long time. I began studying tarot cards to help me cope with the stress of a really toxic boss, but it unearthed a deeper passion. I slowly started giving readings to friends and family, and people would stop me in coffee shops to ask for a quick reading when I was there studying. I struggled a lot with imposter syndrome and fear of what people in the healthcare world (the industry I worked in at the time) would say if they found out I was in to non-linear, non-provable things. I eventually left the healthcare world behind and relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina; the distance from my old world helped me open up to the open fields before me. I started going to local pop-up markets with tinctures or reading cards, and built my business that way.
Wilmington is a smaller town which comes with pros and cons. It absolutely helped me network and be recognized faster than if I was in a bigger city. It can also feel really competitive at times, because how many readers does one town need? That’s the challenge my mind threw at me for months and I had to work through this mental limitation a lot. As I found my voice and authenticity in this work, my unique spin on how I offer services became more authentic, too. So while there are plenty of talented people offering similar services, nobody is doing it the way I do it. I’m much more confident saying that there truly is an ideal reader for every client, and an ideal client for every reader. I’m really proud of this mental shift — I’ve come a long way from caring about what some stuffy doctor thinks about me owning a tarot deck!
Something that sets Conjure apart from many other entities in the spiritual wellness world is the effort to incorporate people in their healing and spiritual journey. The spiritual community as an industry can intersect with late-stage capitalism, selling endless products and services without mindfulness around affordability and environmental impact. A key value at Conjure is, “Create more than you consume,” and so ensuring clients and customers have access to resources and education that help them grow these skills is incorporated into my offerings. Unique workshops are available for those ready to dive deeper, and coaching and education are cornerstones to how I present material discussed in private readings.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wilmington is the prefect city of a long weekend. For friends visiting, I like to show off all the beautiful ways water shows up. It’s part of my master plan to get more of my friends and family to move out here. You can start at any of the three beaches – Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, or Topsail – and get beautiful, crystal clear waters. Downtown Wilmington also has a river walk where you can watch the sun set over the Cape Fear River with a glass of wine in hand. If you land there early morning, 24South and Cheeky Monkey Coffee are the best spots around. A fun afternoon water activity is to explore the intracoastal, or the waterways that lead you to the ocean. This is the best way to see beautiful waterfront home architecture in my opinion. I’d send my vegan friends to The Green House for entirely made-from-scratch meals and unique cocktails. If one day got rained out or simply too hot, I’d take them to sit in the salt cave of Prana Salt Cave close to Wrightsville Beach. And if we’re feeling like a a night downtown is in order, I’d snag reservations at Seabird or take my chances with a walk-in at Savorez.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Conjure wouldn’t exist without two forces of energy — my husband, Mike, and my clients. Mike is the most grounded and compassionate person who wants everyone to succeed and be happy. He reassures me in the slower times, celebrates the big victories, patiently re-explains SEO, and sees Conjure for all it can be. My clients bring admirable levels of honesty and curiosity to their sessions, and this amplifies the experience of the work on both ends. Conjure’s clientele is 80% word-of-mouth referrals, so they also go out of their way to tell friends and family about positive experiences. It’s a form of abundance I couldn’t conceptualize early on in the work but that I feel incredibly honored to experience now that it’s here.
