We had the good fortune of connecting with Karyn Purcell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My career began after I was struggling with my own skin. I had extremely low-self esteem and was willing to pay anything and try any treatment as a broke college graduate to fix my skin. After visiting several skincare specialists that provided little to no skin analysis before pushing me to buy products – I realized there was a major space needed in the industry for a skincare specialist that would prioritize skin analysis and individual home treatment plans just as much as the in-spa treatment itself. I wanted to create a space where clients felt heard and not rushed in and out. So I decided while I was learning how to fix my own skin, I would work towards creating this space. While working at a facial spa during the day, I went back to school at night to become an esthetician. Once I graduated – I left my 9-5 job and pursued my dream of opening the doors to The Florida Facialist.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a solo Medical Esthetician that focuses on customized corrective skincare. I set aside an additional 15 minutes every single client – new or returning – to discuss their home skincare regimen. This has led to the most exciting part of my job – helping people reach their skin goals. There is so much pressure, especially with social media, to have this pore-free perfected skin complexion – and it’s completely unrealistic. One thing that really has set my business apart is I do not use filters on any skin images and videos whatsoever. Real skin is not perfect and I believe the more authentic you are, the more ethical your work is. Clients will return to places they feel they can be themselves and this is why a returning client is one of the best compliments. My career definitely has had a few bumps in the road but it led me to becoming The Florida Facialist and that’s all that matters. The biggest lesson I learned through it all is you’re not going to be motivated everyday so you must be disciplined in reaching your goals.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oohhh this is a tough one because I’m so in love with Florida 🙂 A few of my favorites:
Beach Day: Delray Beach
Rollerblading/Bike Rides : A1A, Delray
Food: El Camino
Massages: EAU Spa
Boating/Paddle Boarding: Local Beer Can Island in Boynton Beach
Shopping: Boutiques on Atlantic Avenue
Scooter Rides: Fort Lauderdale
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My day one clients who trusted me with their skin, thank you. My business has been built on personal referrals and I could not have done it without the kind word of mouth. My friends and family have been a huge support system. My parents who taught me the importance of consistency and work ethic from a young age. And a very special shoutout to Peggy Gotte. From encouraging me to go after my dreams to physically helping me paint the walls to my dream space. Your support, mentorship and encouragement every step of the way has meant the world to me.
