We had the good fortune of connecting with Janay Laing and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janay, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The demand for delicious plant-based meat, dairy and eggs is huge. It is a business opportunity like none other for the food industry – simply offer it, make it taste great and people will respond in droves.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m getting ready to launch my 1st cooking class, “How to Make Plants Delicious”, on Udemy on May 15th. It’s a beginners class focused on flavor; I demonstrate step-by-step how to take any plant-based ingredients and make them taste amazing. I chose Udemy because it will help me reach many more people. After that comes my next class: “Plant-Based Meat 101” – a primer on the best products and how to make delicious meats at home from scratch. I’m building up to live classes in 2022, which will be the best! It will tentatively be hosted somewhere in the Wynwood/ Downtown area. It’s important to note I value both sides of plant-based cuisine – the pure, whole fruits and vegetables approach, and the side that recreates animal products like meat, dairy and eggs. Both are extremely important and very exciting to teach.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There’s tons of spots! I would definitely take them to: – Ittle Litaly – (This gem has the most delicious stromboli ever – vegan or not) – The Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin (All plant-based and EVERYTHING on the menu is good – especially BBQ Short Ribs) – Planta Queen (Haven’t been but looks amazing) – Screaming Carrots in Hallandale (For dazzling East-Asian food) Desserts; – Pamela Wasabi’s cheesecakes taste like heaven (Preorder from her site) – Cindy Lou’s for GIGANTIC vegan chocolate chip cookies.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am forever indebted to Choices Cafe and The Vegetarian Restaurant by Hakin for showing me the light about vegan food. They taught me plant-based food is not bland or boring – it’s the single most innovative, creative, delicious and wholly nourishing way to cook. I’m so thankful for opportunity to work with them.
