We had the good fortune of connecting with Celena Benjamin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Celena, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business profits my community by offering an alternative form of pain relief for people that doesn’t always require surgery or pain medication. As a medical massage therapist I am able to go beyond the aspect of massage just being relaxing and really help reduce muscle pain in my clients. Some chronic issues I have helped my clients with include musculoskeletal conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, arthritis or even dealing with chronic headaches that can come from muscle tightness after looking at a computer all day or being seated for long periods of time. Being able to help relieve pain or even make my clients day more manageable and pain free is where I find I am most valuable in my community.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am very proud of my business and the work that I do. Massage is generally seen as something relaxing or spa like, but many more people are turning to massage as a form of pain relief from muscle aches and chronic conditions. What I provide with my practice is a way for people to move away from traditional pain medications and experience pain relief in a way that affects the entire body in a positive way. Because I offer more than the traditional swedish massage I feel that this is what has allowed my business to grow and me to receive clients the way I have because people are looking for a massage that leaves them feeling better long term.

It definitely wasn’t easy. Networking and reaching out is something I was not an expert at, but I just kept pushing until I found the right businesses willing to give me a chance and refer out my services. I think a valuable lesson that I have learned is perseverance is key to owning a business. Through the slow times and through the prosperous times keeping your name out there is always going to have benefits in the long run.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many places to visit in south florida outside of the traditional party scene. Part of my growing up in the miami area we went to places like venetian pool, Viscaya gardens and took frequent trips to islamorada. So some places I would gravitate towards for dining is some smaller local spots that I grew up eating like palacio de los jugos and places I would visit (especially as someonenwith children) is places like Oleta river, Tarpon feeding in islamorada, The yellow green farmers market in hollywood, and Parrot Jungle island on the Mcarthur Causeway.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout out to my dear friends the Collins. Being a business owner was never something I thought I would pursue. Self doubt and fear can creep in on whether you will be able to make it or sustain your financial needs. But they got the materials I needed to begin and encouraged me that it was possible. And I’m thankful to the Lord who opened the right doors to the right people and places to bring me to where I am today.
