We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Barruos-Brens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue an artistic and creative career because it’s intricately woven into the fabric of my life’s journey and aspirations. My decision stems from a pivotal moment at the age of 16, when my family confronted significant challenges as my mother courageously battled two types of cancer. Witnessing her struggle and the financial strain it placed on our household, I felt compelled to take action. It was then that I embarked on a path of entrepreneurship, starting with selling sweets to contribute to our family’s income.

This early foray into the world of business ignited a passion within me for both culinary arts and entrepreneurship. As I experimented with flavors and recipes, I discovered a profound love for creating dishes that not only delighted the palate but also brought comfort and joy to those around me. Cooking became my sanctuary, a place where I could channel my emotions and express my creativity.

As I honed my culinary skills, I realized that pursuing a career in the culinary arts wasn’t just about making delicious food—it was about telling a story. Each dish became a canvas through which I could share my experiences, my culture, and my journey of resilience. It was this realization that propelled me to pursue formal culinary training at the Miami Culinary Institute.

At just 20 years old, I’ve already made strides in the culinary world, earning recognition for my business acumen and culinary prowess. My specialties in sweets and Caribbean-flavored cuisine have garnered acclaim across Miami Dade College campuses, where I’m esteemed as one of their top suppliers. Beyond academic accolades and scholarships, I’ve had the opportunity to showcase my culinary talents on various platforms, from the Roku Channel to Univision, earning recognition and accolades along the way.

But my journey is about more than just cooking and accolades—it’s about making a meaningful impact. Through my culinary creations, I aim to inspire others, especially young people facing adversity, to pursue their passions relentlessly. I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of food to bring people together, to uplift spirits, and to ignite hope. It’s a power that I strive to harness in every dish I create.

Furthermore, I am deeply committed to giving back to my community. Volunteering in nonprofit initiatives and supporting underserved communities in South Florida is an integral part of my journey. Whether it’s through cooking for those in need or donating my time and resources to charitable causes, I believe in using my talents to make a positive difference in the world.

In essence, my decision to pursue an artistic and creative career in the culinary arts is a testament to my resilience, my passion for storytelling, and my unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact. It’s not just about cooking—it’s about using food as a medium to connect, inspire, and uplift others on their own journeys.
