We had the good fortune of connecting with Christian Proscia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Christian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was in 10th grade, I was signed up to take a broadcasting class at my school. Being able to take that class, I fell in love with all things digital arts. During the semester, the world got shut down with the COVID-19 pandemic. While in lockdown, I found an old camera that my dad had and I went around my neighborhood and started taking pictures of anything. I spent that six month period of time learning all that I could about photography.

When school started up again our Athletic Department limited the number of spectators that could attend games. The only way students could attend athletic events was if they were immediate family members of the players. Seeing a loophole, I volunteered to do game photography so I could attend the games and as a way of supporting my friends while providing them with content for their social media and recruiting accounts. I use my photography Instagram account as a mobile portfolio to showcase my growth as a photographer.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The thing that sets me apart from a lot of people is my willingness to shoot anything and everything. I’ve had the ability to shoot a wide range of different subjects. From my school’s athletic department, conservatory and yearbook to modeling and nature shoots. Something I feel proud about is the athletes I have been able to shoot for. I’ve been lucky to provide many high level athletes with content, including some NFL players.

The journey to get to where I am today as a photographer has been fun and exciting. The best way to grow in your craft is to practice, learn, and take criticism well. When I started I was obviously inexperienced, and a big reason for my growth has been because of the mentors I’ve had. The lessons and tips that they have taught me have helped me grow as a photographer, as a person, and as a leader. My goal for this school year is to help and guide the next generation of photographers, the same way others helped me.

Something I want the world to know is that this is not the last year for me. I am committed to continue my academic and athletic careers at St. Bonaventure University. I will major in Sports Media at the renowned Jandoli School of Communications. I plan to further my career in sports photography, and continue my growth in this field.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was taking a friend from out-of-town somewhere, I would take them up to Jupiter Beach. It’s a great option because you can either go to the ocean or over to the lagoon at Dubois Park. After spending the day at the beach, I would take them to Dune Dogs for lunch. I highly recommend the Blackened Mahi sandwich.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would first like to thank the Digital Media Arts staff at my school. Mr. Austin Parenti, Mr. Tim Demoss and Mr. Phil King, you three have inspired me to pursue digital arts, and you have been some of the most influential mentors I’ve had in my life.

I would like to thank The King’s Academy Athletic Department for allowing me access at games. A Special shoutout to Assistant Athletic Director Ryan Johnson for supporting me throughout this journey. Your leadership and belief in me is a huge factor to keep going in everything I do.

Next, I would like to shoutout my fellow photographers Dan Calvelli, Jack Walter, Sandra Watson, Mason Shipman and my sister Maris for being my favorite people to work with. You guys make games fun, and I love working anything and everything with you guys.

Finally, I would like to shoutout the student athletes at my school. Thank you all for supporting me and my work. I love being able to work with you all.
