We had the good fortune of connecting with Christie O’Connor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christie, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
This is one of those questions that is like a roller coaster. We have been participating in some of the same large craft fairs for the past eight years and have had successful sales. Last September at one of our most profitable shows we sold about one quarter of merchandise than we had in previous years. We tend to question ourselves and ask ourselves “did we not have enough variety, fragrance, product?” And then we think that maybe it should be our last show and we should not even bother anymore. Several months later we decided to keep going and participate in yet another one of our larger and more profitable shows and we sold more merchandise that we had ever sold before at any show. Ok, so let’s keep going. We know that we have a great product and our same customers come back year after year just to come and buy our items. That is validation enough to not give up!!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The one thing that sets us apart from other crafters and artists is that we are always trying new things with our candles and soap designs. Where some people might have the same items year after year, we always strive to do something a little different, whether it be with our unique candle art (which is ALWAYS distinct and never duplicated) or designing soaps with shiny micas and bright colors, marbling, soap scrolls and other techniques. Each booth for each craft event is always a little different from the previous set up. As a small business owner, if it weren’t for the customer we would not exist. Creating a unique AND affordable product for people is our goal. Christie’s Candles & Soaps is always available for fundraising and we have created many special gift boxes for non profit organizations at no charge for the organization. It is all about giving back to the community. Whether it be with our unique candle art (which is ALWAYS distinct and never duplicated) or designing soaps with shiny micas and bright colors, marbling, soap scrolls and other techniques. Each booth for each craft event is always a little different from the previous set up.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to sing and am currently singing in a group, I would probably either go to see a local group perform or go to karaoke somewhere in town. If my friend enjoys the theater we might take in a show at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. I am not much of a drinker but I love a good meal so we might take a trip to downtown Delray Beach to sight see, do a little shopping in the boutiques and grab a bite to eat. The beach is also a great place to go. Unfortunately a lot of us who live here in Florida don’t take advantage of the beauty that is right in our backyard. I would definitely spend some quality time at the beach.!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister, Laurie is the artist behind all of our designer candles. We have different categories of products. I make all the organic glycerin soaps, body scrubs and standard tin and jar candles but Laurie has the talent to transform a candle into a one of a kind work of art. She uses different jewels, crystals, charms and more to create gorgeous designs. Our customers are amazed and delighted at these beautiful pieces. We have a following of people who come back year after year to add to their collection.
