We had the good fortune of connecting with Dewi Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dewi, what inspires you?
A huge inspiration of mine comes from my background. Im half Indonesian and most of my family lives in Bali where i visit quiet often. Bali is filled with so many artists, craftsman, and entrepreneurs that create the most amazing work. From paintings and furniture to cafes and restaurants the island is surrounded by beauty! Every time i visit, i always leave with a surge of new ideas and inspiration. Another inspiration of mine are definitely my friends and family. Being around creative like minded individuals gives me such a different perspective on things i never knew could exist. For example, growing up i never thought art was something you can make into a career. However, over the years I’ve become good friends with people who have made their creative passions into a job. My friend Ali is a crazy talented bikini designer mastermind who just got interviewed by Forbes! My sister who lives in Bali started her own clothing line focused around vibrant colors and floral prints and now has famous influencers around the world wearing her designs. I also have a friend who is an incredible mural artist travel across the US selling her artwork and just renovated a school bus into a tea house. All of these inspirations are essentially a culmination of who I’ve become and inspire to be.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Bungalow drift is where you can find affordable high quality handmade island/bohemian style home decor and fashion accessories. Everything from my shop is either handmade by me or by skilled artisans i know personally from Bali Indonesia. I specialize in designing and creating macrame wall art to be hung in your home. My artwork varies from large wall hangings, nursery mobiles, and outdoor swings to small keychains and ornaments. I love designing and customizing wall hangings for each clients needs. Im always most excited to see when my hangings are completed and in my clients home. Seeing where they placed it, in what room, and how it cohesively flows with their style is so rewarding. Bungalow Drift started as a hobby that slowly turned into a small business. I essentially wanted to decorate my first apartment with home decor inspired by my travels throughout Asia. However, i couldn’t afford the things that i wanted and also couldn’t fit it in my suitcase so i decided to make it myself! My style kept changing and so did my hangings and my skill level. I eventually had friends asking me to make them pieces for their home and even weddings. Then i realized i could turn this into something more than just a hobby. I also traveled back and forth to visit my family in Bali so i had the idea of sourcing handmade products from local artisans to supplement my brand and make it something unique. All the while supporting other artisans with their business. It definitely wasn’t easy. I was new to the importing world and didn’t realize how expensive shipping was and the logistics of it. I spent way more money than i had and didn’t price my products correctly. It was something that nobody i had known was familiar with so i didn’t have anyone to turn to for questions or guidance. After learning the hard way several times, i eventually learned what to do…kind of. Haha its still something I’m working on till this day. I learned throughout this process that I need to trust my instincts and stop doubting myself. I hate admitting it but I’m a bit insecure when it comes to what I’m capable of. I need my friends and family to hype me up sometimes before i take big risks which i feel is normal. But I’m an over thinker and that can really get the best of me a lot of the time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If i had a friend come visit me for a week i would definitely take them out to park and ocean on A1A for some cocktails and live music followed by dinner at Coconuts on the intercostal where my best friend Chris works. I may be biased but he’s the absolute best bartender in town and the food there is amazing. Some other restaurants and bars i love going to is Greek Islands, Smoke, Board room, Riverside market, One Door East, and Kubo. Id also take them down south to several places like Wynwood to eat some of the local eclectic restaurants and bars there and stroll through Wynwood walls. I also love going to downtown hollywood and people watching on the boardwalk. Maybe even go to Oleta park and go paddle boarding or kayaking for some outdoor activities.
