We had the good fortune of connecting with Diego Fiorito and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diego, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Working in the banking and financial industry has been my desire and what I did for 25 plus years. After working more than 15 years in Panama and Honduras (Bladex and Cabei), being member of the Exco, participating in Board of Governors and Board of Directors meeting at Cabei, I decided to go back to Argentina.
I took a minor role in HSBC betting in a global organization to grow there. After 2 years in the bank, I perceived that I was not moving forward and with little options of getting something better. The bank started to lay off people before Covid and after Covid, it continued that trend. So, my decision got to start something on my own. Then is when I decided to make an investment in the US, as it is a much more consolidated and mature market.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As I mentioned, I worked most of my career in the banking and financial industry. As it, I never dreamt of writing a book and I have written four up to today.
When I left the bank in Honduras, I had a story to tell of so many things that I saw there; however, I couldn’t do it. I knew I wanted to write something, but I just could not find the way. I tried in different forms, but I was impossible.
Then, we moved to Argentina in 2018 and things started to go complicated in the country, I found myself writing little things about why the country needed to do things differently to get out of inflation, recession, unemployment or corruption. Every time I saw or read something of interest, I would put in on paper with my explanation. I wrote too much and without form. As I say, I was trying to tell my younger sister why Argentina was not doing the right things to grow and why crisis keep recurring.
After some time, I found a person who helped me in providing me a guide and a way of writing to communicate my ideas in a much better way. I ended up writing a first book “The opportunity to change” on economy in Argentina. The book relates causes and consequences of different actions and why Covid provided an opportunity to do things on a different way.
Then, I wrote another book on risk management, which had been my professional area of expertise in the financial services.
After those two books, I had the idea of how to write the first idea I had not been able to so at the beginning. So, I wrote a novel with my experience in the banking industry in Central America.
Obviously, I had to mention that in all these adventures, I had the help of different persons who led me all the way to my goal.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Now that I am running a restaurant, probably I would take them to the restaurant. The place is called Caminito, as a place in La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
We try to recreate that place, we have different shows performing different days, for example, live music, comedians, magic, tango, workshops.
I will definitively, show them the best food combined with a great show, with a good Argentine Malbec.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For sure my family (Guadalupe and my 3 kids, Diego, Eugenia and Matias).
Guadalupe has supported my all the way in this journey (US, Panama, Honduras, Argentina and US again). She was eager to start from a new beginning each time and thanks to her support we could do it. On the other hand, my kids suffered few brutal changes in their lives, and we expect them to grow from them. Life is a journey, and they have many things and experiences to tell!
