Meet Dominc Wren | Funktasy Magazine’s Editor & Event Organizer for Funktasy Records

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominc Wren and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominc, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Simply because of the lack of having to stay within a box/structure. One thing that really attracts of the music industry is the complete lack of rules on how things need to be done. This may sound juvenile but my attraction to this industry is because you will always see something different. For me, this can take many forms but the constant change and acceleration of that change simply makes this industry very attractive.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others in the position that I am is my genuine love and passion for the industry. I see a lot of people around me who are clearly in it for the clout and reputation, but that’s there thing and I keep reminding myself that it might come back in their face. My journey in this field is no where near close to being done; I am only getting started. I just turned 22 years old and as of yet, there definitely have been some highs and lows and I can only expect a lot more bumpy roads ahead. That’s just the nature of any industry. Some of the ways I get through the tougher parts of my career is reminding myself why I am in this. It sounds simple and generic but I’ve learned that it is way easier said than done. Clearly and precisely knowing why you are doing something and what makes you get up in the morning to do that thing is the most important thing for me when going through bad times. Introspection is key for me to keep going and make enlightened decisions. Something I’ve learned from being in this industry is to be incredibly organized and that starts from keeping my room in order. It sounds stupid but being organized in this field can bring major benefits in not only your mental health but the quality of your work too. So to be organized in my work and in my head, it starts by making my bed in the morning,

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being based in Montréal, Québec, there is no shortage of things to do. I would first them out to my favourite jazz club in town called Bootlegger l’Authentique. I would then visit all the extraordinary urban parks that Montréal is known for. If they were visiting during the winter, the next stop would be to enjoy the worlds coldest electronic music festival called Igloofest. There almost too many options to choose from when deciding where to go eat. I think I would most likely bring them to eat a classic Québec breakfast in one of Montréal’s “binerie” and then a really greasy poutine from a local restaurant. Montréal is also blessed with awesome ski hills just outside the city so a quick day trip to one of those is inevitable.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say one of my original mentors that initially got me into the music industry is a gentleman called David Mann. He is the founder of an online EDM event calendar called EDM Canada. He was the first one to recognize my interest in the music industry and gave my the opportunity to get my foot in the door. The job and responsibilities was a key factor in progressing me to where I am today.
