Meet Dominic DeLaney | Musician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominic DeLaney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominic, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think risks are necessary in any path of life, as they lead to growth. And you can grow from both failed risks and successful risks. Immediately I think of the recent Amtrak tours I’ve done, and the Amtrak tours I’ll be doing to end out 2023.
I didn’t know if this would work. To some extent, I still don’t know if it works, being that I’ve only done one, in the northeast going from New York to Connecticut, to Maine, to Boston, and to Rhode Island. Now I’m taking it to the west coast to see how it’ll do over there.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So, my last album For Life came out last September. Compared to my first album, this one came together exceptionally fast. In the beginning of 2022 I got sober, and that change sparked a lot of creativity. I don’t think For Life is a “recovery” record, but certainly a record about growth. I’ve always enjoyed music that is honest, and unashamed, and that’s something I try to stay true to in my own work.
I think it’s easy to forget accomplishments in this industry because everyone is focused on the next thing. (I never really celebrated the first Amtrak tour working out, because I’m busy planning 3 more!) I do take pride in my work ethic, and touring schedule. I love being on the road and have currently played 19/50 states. Hoping to get that number up this year.
I’m a firm believer in doing it yourself. I wanted to be a touring musician – so I started booking tours. I’m not going to wait for someone to offer me a dream job, or for someone to do the work for me. I’m going to work my tail off, and do it my self. When I first started, that even applied to making my own merch. I used to have DIY t-shirts, stickers, CDs. To me, it’s just the way to go. I look at bands like NOFX, Black Flag, Frank Turner – nothing was handed to them, they went out and took it – metaphorically, of course.
I think what I’d like people to take away from what I do, is that we’re all in this mess together. We have much more in common than we think.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me, I love the Wynwood area. In my early twenties I spent plenty of late nights down there, browsing the art on the walls and getting in to all sorts of trouble. These days I stick to just browsing the walls!
I’m not the biggest sports guy, my sport is hockey, so probably take them to a Panthers game.
Then of course my hometown of Lake Worth is a place I could navigate blindfolded. There’s so much to see, and I love the downtown haunts.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh, my wife 100%. Believe me, I could fill a book with the ways she’s the absolute best, so I’ll try and summarize! My wife and I are high school sweethearts, and have been through pretty much everything together. She’s seen how my music career has evolved from popping in at open mic nights, to now going on full on tours. That change hasn’t always been easy, and like any relationship it requires some work. But hey, the work makes it worth it.
