We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Bobbi Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Bobbi, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Being one of only three black female orthodontists with my own practice in Brooklyn New York is very impactful to the black and brown community. Brooklyn is around 60% black and Hispanic. Me building this business in this community (when I could have purchased this building anywhere) allows the next generation to see me and believe anything is possible! This applies to this community as well as the world! Social media has made it so that we are all literally just a clock away! I have followers from all over the world now! I get DMs from young girls asking for mentorship all of the time. I’m currently mentoring close to ten girls….. with my busy schedule.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My main business of course is orthodontics! I went to college and graduated with a major in Biological Sciences and a minor in chemistry from Drexel University in Philadelphia. Then I went Howard University in DC for Dental school . The biggest lesson I learned from this was DONT STOP! Don’t take time off if you can help it! Stay focused and push through! Don’t be discouraged by the number of years. What’s four more years towards your dream and a lifetime of comfort? After graduating I did a residency in orthodontics which was three more years of training. Orthodontics is a very competitive field. My program only accepts two people per year! I’m still the ONLY black person (male or female) to finish that program. Needless to say, this was NOT EASY! Lol I started looking for a job before I even finished my residency! I opened Aces Braces a month after finishing! I worked for a private office and taught orthodontics to general dentists while I was building my practice. Again this was very challenging but I felt “ hey I’ve been poor all my life…. What’s a few more years?” As the practice grew I gave or more days during the week and took days away from the other offices. What I learned from this was patience…… I didn’t want to take out anymore loans so I built my first office out of the Money I was making. I put EVERY dime back into my brand and my office. This took MUCH dedication
I have real estate situations but we can get into that another tine

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The world is a little different now but I would start with the touristy Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building etc! THEN once that was out of the way ( since it was their first time) I would bring them bar/restaurant hopping in BROOKLYN! Everywhere from Negril BK to peter Luger’s! I love sweet BK and Tillys, I would definitely have them try healthy juices and smoothies from THIRST RX! We would also have to do a dinner at Brooklyn Chophose

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my staff, THE BEAR STAFF IN THE WORLD! My family and my partner, my biggest support system and most of all my daughter who also makes my life sooooo much easier! She is the best treatment coordinator ever!!
