We had the good fortune of connecting with Dwayne Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dwayne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have always known that I was called to create change. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to live this calling out in various ways. In 2016, there was a rising need within communities of color to educate our students and support them through the phases of their development, understanding their unique history and identity. For that reason, Change Makers Academy was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Change Makers Academy is a community of support for middle and high school males that takes a needs-based approach to community engagement and service. Our work developed from an awareness that positive examples were lacking within our spheres of influence. One of the challenges we have faced is maintaining support for our non-profit service. We are aware of the unique demands on the community and mindful of how to approach our programming and our support system. We are fortunate to have a team of innovators who use every resource to the advantage of our students. What sets Change Makers Academy a part is its partners! Whether it’s mobile learning or international exploration, our partners show up and make every initiative impactful for all!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Kissimmee/Orlando area is known for parks and family-friendly activities. At some point in the week, I would incorporate a theme-park visit or maybe even Disney Springs where we could enjoy the Disney “vibe” (without the rides). The retail outlets are also a must for the best variety and amazing deals. Some of my favorite things to eat in the area are Al’s “New York Style” Pizza, Big John’s BBQ, Mighty Wings and King Cajun. Those would ALL top the list for places to eat and to ensure the best time ever! A local spot that is sure to amuse is Old Town. From classic car shows to Mom & Pop eateries only found in Kissimmee, the traditional charm, theme-park rides and live music make this an unforgettable stop.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is central to any success that I have achieved. They are thought leaders and difference makers. I am grateful for a family who constantly encourages and supports me. My wife, Typhanie and sons, Adam & Aden are my “vision instigators”. They are stubbornly present on my success journey and my biggest cheerleaders. I am surrounded by amazing friends who are family. They are ever-excelling in their careers and true agents of change. My educational aspirations are supported by dynamic mentors like Dr. Noel Gordon and my Impact Leader, Charles King of Profound Gentlemen. As a male educator of color, I could not be as impactful as I am without them. I could go on and on about those who have poured into me. Family friends, aunt, uncles, church members, students, business partners, etc. Just know that if you are reading this, you are likely one of them! Thank you…
