We had the good fortune of connecting with Fareed Al-mashat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fareed, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
I don’t consider what I do as a filmmaker and photographer as ” work”. For me it’s a joy and fun . Having the opportunity to be involved in a creative photo project or film is what makes me happy. …especially when the final products exceeds my client’s expectations. I’m a perfectionist and try to never cut corners or compromise during a shoot.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I first studied architecture for a year but at the same loved movies and the idea of making films. I decided to switch careers and pursued filmmaking. My ability to tell a story as a filmmaker and having a good eye for composition, lighting, and mood lead me to also take up photography . Both fields are extremely difficult and competitive but I am secure enough in my ability that I did not let that get in the way of pursuing my passions.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take a friend to places that showcase the real local daily life of my city. showing them typical tourist sites would be secondary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would say that my parents were very encouraging for me pursue a career in film production and photography. This is not typical of most parents who usually encourage their kids to pursue more traditional and ” safe” careers.
