We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabbie Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabbie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
What I had before working for myself while I was always grinding and struggling with burnout: ….

– A beautiful family
– A stable-ish job
– A desk in an office with coworkers
– A career I thought I needed
– A capped salary and limited advancement path (especially given that I was a mom)

What I have now that I prioritize myself with my business, that is being built to support me & my family:

– A beautiful family and TIME to spend with them
– A business that allows me to prioritize my mental health by scheduling in my workout and meditation practice
– A home office that saves me on commuting time, giving me the space to be able to do things outside of my work, like see my friends, volunteer and get involved in my community
– A channel in which I’m able to do what I LOVE – help & educate other women and moms, speak freely about my passions (and more confidently about my opinions), and meet new amazing people along the way

Let’s redefine was success and balance means in our lives. Because, our latest definition over the past 10, 20 years really hasn’t helped us much. It’s pushed many into deep depression and mental health issues.

We need to try something different. Reconnect with ourselves, our family, and our community. Prioritize togetherness and love.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the mom of two little girls, four & two, who are both the light of my life and the purpose of everything I do… (and also the source of much of my exhaustion and a lot of frustration ha!)

That keeps me on my toes every day and really, the reason why I’m here doing what I do.

WEM exists because I have felt so mistreated by Corporate America and felt like I had been brought up with a hustle and grind culture, that didn’t work for me when I had my children. I knew there had to be another way to do it – to live your life first and ensure your work or business is serving you.

I have worked in financial auditing, corporate accounting and serving clients as a fractional CFO. What was missing was helping business owners manage day to day cash with their operations of their business. Helping them know what tools to use so they know how to get the information they need to make decisions, that as a business owner, can be critical to your long-term success.

It’s so important to be financially educated, both in our personal and business lives. But there isn’t a lot of support available unless you’re willing to shell out a lot of cash.

Most business owners don’t have a background in Finance or Accounting. And they shouldn’t (because, honestly, that doesn’t necessarily prepare you that well either). A lot of times we’re just going through the motions, but when you have financial clarity, you are empowered to make more informed decisions.

There’s so much shame and taboo around talking about money in our culture, that it can be hard to know who to turn to or what the right next steps are for your business.

We help break down those barriers and bring compassion, empathy and understanding to our clients so they understand they’re not alone and that they’ve never been given the right tools to do what they need in their business.

Our focus is helping women and mom owned businesses. The mom-bond is fierce and instant and historically, when women have their children, they’ve been written off – other people deciding that their career was over.

I think we’re in this amazing movement right now for women and moms especially, that people are taking notice of all that moms do, both inside and outside of their caretaking roles.

By giving that power back to women and mom business owners, we’re doing our part to amplify their voices, increase financial confidence and take what they deserve from their business, and encourage flexibility around building a business that serves them.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in between Portland Maine, Portsmouth New Hampshire and Boston Massachusetts, which are 3 of my favorite cities.

My itinerary would start in Portland ME, wind down the ME/NH coastline to Ogunquit and Kittery, stay a few days in Portsmouth and then end in Boston.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My kids, my husband & my business partner. If it weren’t for my kids and becoming a mother – none of this change would’ve happened. I wouldn’t have this perspective to speak from or to connect to other moms with. My husband because he helped me grow to love myself and supports me every single day. And my business partner, because he believes in my conviction.
